Rear (i.e. parent-facing) double pram/pushchairs - do they exist!?

KKKKaty · 10/01/2011 14:09

I've just started to research double prams - DS1 will be 20 months old when the new baby comes along, therefore I will definitely need a double pram rather than a single with a buggy board, I think.

Here are my criteria:-

  1. New baby must be able to lie flat i.e. must be fully reclining or have a separate carrycot option.
  2. New baby facing backwards, towards me.
  3. It would be lovely if the toddler half could face me or away as we chose.
  4. Would prefer side-by-side I think rather than top and bottom.

Does such a thing exist?! Thanks for your help.

i think the first class city-is double and both facing.

lecohen · 10/01/2011 14:29

sounds like the firstwheels double would work but I hear it is big though

enimod · 10/01/2011 14:31

firstwheels-thats what i meant!

plantsitter · 10/01/2011 14:32

I have got a first wheels which does this but it is enormous and unwieldy and frankly I hate it (thank goodness I got it second hand). If you have a big house, big car and only walk down big streets and use v spacious public transport and shops with huge doorways, it is perfect.

detachandtrustyourself · 10/01/2011 14:32

I think emmaljunga do what you need.

KKKKaty · 10/01/2011 15:16

Thanks for this. The First wheels one does look like it ticks all my boxes but it gets frankly terrible reviews, largely because of what Plantsitter says, very large and not well made either. Have had a look at Emmaljunga but can't find a double that is rear facing. I shall keep looking and perhaps see if I can find a First Wheels one in a shop just to have a look at. I just don't like the thought of not being able to see my baby - I like to know when they nod off and such like!

This any good? I bought a second hand one off ebay and it was lovely but far too big for my tiny house!

Double mountain buggy - although it's forward facing in the main seat, you can attach a carrycot for the first 6 months which would be parent facing.

nicm · 10/01/2011 17:51

a teutonia team cosmo? i have got one for ds' and it is rf although both seats are either rf or ff. it can take a carrycot on the seat too. haven't used it much as still recovering but have been really happy with the single version so ordered the double.

:)

KKKKaty · 10/01/2011 19:01

Thanks - they both look interesting - especially the teutonia. Will look into it.

If you've got megabucks, the Bugaboo Donkey would be great!

Baby jogger city select? Can turn into a single pram when your DS1 is older and ticks the boxes apart from the side by side. Seats are lovely and big as well.

plantsitter · 10/01/2011 19:54

Where are you KKKKaty? If you're near me you can come and look at mine and - I take everything back it's brilliant - buy it off me if you like it??

I'm in SE London.

HappyAsASandboy · 10/01/2011 20:19

I have the firstwheels and really enjoy being out and about with it. It is slightly wider than some other side-by-sides, but it is less wide than a standard wheelchair, so I am fairly confident using disabled access.

I like the carrycots, it folds easily, and I find it really easy to manouver as it turns on the spot. It is also easy to put together, though it doesn't fold with the seats/carrycots in, so I wouldn't get it if you might need to fold on busses. Not sure whether any parent facing side-by-sides can fold with seats in though?

On the negative side, it is big when folded. We used to have a Golf, but the chasis filled the boot, leaving the seats/carrycots to squeeze into the front passenger seat (assuming two child seats in back). When we realised we'd have to take two cars for the four of us to have a family day out, we decided it was time to change the car! It also doesn't take car seats on the chasis.

I think it depends on what is important to you. I wanted carrycots rather than a lie-flat pushchair (some of which look scarily flimsy), and parent facing and side-by-side were essential. I think the first wheels is the best for these features unless you have silly money to spend.

Happy to answer questions about the first wheels if you have any Smile

Pretty sure Emmaljunga did a rear facing twin but don't appear to now...Possibly find one on eBay???

KKKKaty · 10/01/2011 20:54

Thanks for the offer Plantsitter but I'm up north.

HappyasaSandBoy - We have an estate car so hopefully it would fit in the boot when folded, but our house doesn't have much room so I'd have to look into how much floor space it would take up in the hallway.

5intheBed - The Baby Jogger City Select looks good too - will look into that.

I've just had a look at the emmaljunga website and their twin "nitro" has a reversible seat, so you can have both new baby and older baby facing you. The seats recline seperately so you can have one lying down and one sitting up. Emmaljunga prams are very well made. I had one with a toddler seat on, but wished I had got a double one for when the older baby wants to lie down.

5inthebed · 10/01/2011 22:16

John lweis have them if you're near one and want to play with one.

HappyAsASandboy · 11/01/2011 02:16

KKKKaty - I leave my chasis folded in the hall as it stands up on its side so look at the smaller dimensions!). The carrycots then stack next to it.

rattling · 11/01/2011 12:07

Emmaljunga and Teutonia make my First wheels twin look small! But they are so much better made. I love my first wheels (and the new ones have improved the skimpy hood issue). It feels like it is about to break sometimes - but has coped with Edinburgh's hills, high kerbs and cobbles without any actual problems (and I would walk my boys for hours every day).

I am now looking for a replacement as my boys are getting big and don't need to be walked around all the time, so something more transport friendly is required.

OBaby Zezu Twin Pushchair does everything as I am looking for one myself but not sure where I can go and actually look at one
