Buying a used Cam - questions?

PinkElephant73 · 22/09/2010 10:20

I have chance to buy a used Cam for £250. Im hoping this is an ok price as planning to resell when Ive finished with it.

The bumper bar is slightly damaged but otherwise the seller says it is in good condition. I think the bumper bar can be replaced is this correct?

I am going to see it tonight, and hopefully buy if all is as described. Are there any potential faults I should look out for? it has air tyres.

Also should I replace the mattress? If so does anyone know where to buy one from.

thanks for any help!

Hi. Bumper bar can easily be replaced from ebay £5 - £20. Mattress can also be bought from an ebay seller which makes replacement mattresses that fit cams for about £15. Not same as original. You can buy bugaboo mattresses but I think I have seen them for about £60! It is recommended that you always buy a new mattress for each baby using a piece of equipment - although probably not everyone does. It is thought to reduce the risks of cot death. If the Cam is clean and the fabrics are good then the price is fine. Check zips, fade lines on the hood. Breaks work properly. Handle adjusts ok and ask the buyer to show you how it folds - there is definitely a knack to this. Check the condition of the front swivel wheels as they are about £75 to replace. Check condition of the raincover, foam on the frame and that the seat adjusters work.HTH.

I will add, if you feel any weakness on either side when pressing down on handlebars, dont buy it. Also, if it is the old style chassis with the toggle adjustment for the handlebar, then £250 is a bit steep, otherwise its a fair price.
If its the new style chassis with the clips on the handlebar adjustment, check the screws are OK on the inside, and that there is no slipping when you pull on the handlebar with the clips closed.
Other common problem is with front wheel - the plastic cap on the top of the fixing is frequently missing, and also, the support sticks in either end of the carrycot frequently are misplaced - check they are there.
Basically, any damage to foam, any damage to wheels or big marks on the chassis will reduce the resale value.
Also, ask them when they bought it, was it bought new, and check their story against the production date on the chassis.

Hmmm, depends, what type of chassis is it? new or old? how old is it? what condition are the fabrics?

Does it have any extras?

Does it include carrycot.

In all honesty £250 sounds a bit steep for 'just' a cam in 'good' condition with a damaged bumper ba.

My cam was new style chassis, sand bases and beige fleeces, footmuff cam chaning bag, spare wheel (?!) travel bag, carseat adaptors and parasol for £200 and it was immaculate.

Just be careful and take your time if theres no rush, theres always a better deal out there :)
