Any point in forking out for a new bugaboo...?

Or are we better off getting a secondhand one? DH v suspicious of buying anything on ebay, wants a new one with warranty, etc. But I think they are over priced and we could get a reasonable deal secondhand. Bit of a gamble though and I will be blamed if anything then goes wrong! Expecting our first and would like 2 more, so DH reckons it's a long-term investment. Any experiences of either buying new or secondhand? Was it worth it? Any problems?
Thanks!

20% code at Mothercare just now if you look further down.
Might swing it!

samsonara · 02/08/2010 12:48

firstly are you sure you want a bugaboo? You don't need to spent that much esp as you might not find it suits your needs. I only say that because most people I know who opted for one soon replaced it with cheaper models which fit better in car boots, on buses and are better for putting shopping in. But if you are sure, I think you would be able to get a good price if you sold it on. Also do you want to have kids close together in age ir spaced out, only you might not want the old model say 3 years down the line. I dunno personally I wouldn't bother with that price category for a buggy but I have plenty of pals who love the exclusitivity of them.

Thanks horsemadgal, yes spotted that mothercare discount code in the pregnancy forum - anyone know when it expires? We are just taking ages with this decision.

Samsonara thanks for the advice, have done a fair amount of research (need something high handled, lightweight, manoeuvrable, good for both city shopping and country walks, and also it's important to us to have a proper carrycot for new born, not just a lie-flat position in a regular stroller) - still feel quite confused and have some concerns about foldability but nothing else we've played around with has felt as comfortable as the bugaboo. Still need to have a play with Babystyle Oyster and maybe Micralite Toro but can't find them in a showroom nearby.

So I think we want the bugaboo but am not interested in exclusivity at all and feel resentful at the price. Just wandered if anyone got one secondhand e.g. on ebay but then had problems that couldn't be fixed? Or is a used one pretty reliable?

Bah, I HATE making this decision!

That's good I'm impressed you've done your research, it sounds suitable for you, if you can't decide consider going for the new one, if you look after it well, you will definately be able to get most of your money back if you resell, and you can both have piece of mind about warranty. If you don't resell and use it for your other dc, then you've made a good investment. I think peace of mind is what you are both after and not having to chase up replacement parts. I am sure teh second hand ones are still in good condition, but when you know that people sell say them on for more than they paid for them, you might as well get a new one.

when i bought a bargain bugaboo earlier this year i got an old chassis style so i didnt get a miwheels by 'mistake'

2ndDestiny · 02/08/2010 13:27

What's 'miwheels' then?

And otherwise, how has the secondhand bugaboo worked out for you?

misdee · 02/08/2010 13:31

miwheels

miwheels

its a direct copy of a bugaboo cameleon.

i love the cam, i sold mine as in need of a double now, and i only bought it with a seat uunit for £160 second hand. its a great pushchair, and i think once dd4 is out of the buggy i will look into another second hand one for baby when he/she is old as well. atm i have an icandy apple which will be upgraded to a pear later this year.

misdee · 02/08/2010 13:35

i would go for new, from mothercare with the 20% off code btw.

2ndDestiny · 02/08/2010 13:44

thanks, did not know anything about this but will certainly be very vigilant if we do try to get a secondhand one...

Dannii Minogue has the mothercare my choice pram and i'm guessing she could have had a bugaboo if she wanted one.
It seems to do just about everything the bug does but for half the price and then of course you'd get 20% off too.

misdee · 02/08/2010 15:27

i think dannii has a 'deal' with mothercare ;)

2ndDestiny · 02/08/2010 16:35

thanks mamatomany
I do like the My Choice but it's heavier than the Chameleon and I have a dodgy shoulder leftover from a car accident, so need something light

If you are planning another kid in the next two/three years I'd go for a britax dual or baby jogger city select,. they're not much different from a bugaboo, but can be used with your second child too, so you don't need to fork out for a bugaboo and a double. if the weight bothers you I would suggest buying a mac quest or baby jogger city mini as well for the car/holidays. The two together will be cheaper than a bug and you don't need to add a double to the cost

2ndDestiny · 02/08/2010 18:23

thanks naomi for the tip, I will have a look at these...
am seriously getting pushchair fatigue!
