My dd's bed is under her window. It has one top opener and two side openers which open very wide. I want restrictors fitted so that she can have the windows open at night but not risk her falling out. She is 7yrs, she wouldn't climb out but an accidental enthusiastic bounce on the bed could end in disaster (and no she isn't a pfb but as this happened to a friend's child I am anxious about it - friend's child, miraculously fine btw) THe window company who fitted the windows are refusing to put restrictors on because of fire regs (fair enough) but since she is second floor with a sheer drop below and so couldn't use the window to escape I think she is far more likely to be injured falling out.

ANyway, basically is there such thing as a window restrictor I can safely fit but can be easily removed (by an adult) in an emergency. THanks for your help.

I don't understand. Why are they refusing to put restrictors on? They don't permanently hold the window. Mine, which were fitted by a window company, have a catch you can lift up and then the window will open fully.

Ring them back and ask what sort they use. Can't they fit any others?

I have spoken to them at length, they basically refuse to fit any restrictors OR if they do I will have to sign a disclaimer saying it was my decision to fit them. They are being very painful about the whole thing.
They refuse to accept my point that injury or worse by falling out is FAR more likely than injury etc due to a fire.

Can you not just open the top opener at night and close the others?

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 08/07/2010 16:45

Can you move her bed?

ShinyAndNew · 08/07/2010 16:49

Why not just sign the disclaimer?

KitKatKittens · 08/07/2010 17:53

There isn't anywhere else to move the bed too. We do open the top at night but when it's really hot and still it would be much better with more open.
We could sign the disclaimer but I think they threw that into the discussion basically to discourage us, I doubt they even have such a thing.
Team Edward - any idea where they got them?

Could you just lock the side windows and leave the top one open?
I would write your own disclaimer, send it to them and ask for a date when they will fit the restrictors. I don't know how restrictors work but can't see that they are a big deal.
They possobly don't want to come and do it, a small and low profit job, when they could be spending the day fitting a whole new set of windows.

greenlotus · 08/07/2010 18:26

They are mad. Restrictors can be post-fitted which are openable by an adult from inside or out (for means of escape) but not by a small child. I know - we've had them fitted on four upstairs Upvc windows.

they are something like these, they fit invisibly between the frame and the opening part. They allow the window open about an inch when pulled, to open fully you pull back slightly, release the sprung latch and then pull wide.

Pannacotta · 08/07/2010 18:30

Surely any builder/handyman could do this, rather than trying to negotiate with the window co?
If not then just sign the disclaimer and get them back asap...
