Well 7 tester pots later and I still can't find one I like.

Its for our hall, stairs and landing. What I want is a rich, buttery, yellowy (without being yellow ) cream colour.

I have tried

Dulux Buttermilk
Dulux Ivory
Dulux Cream
Dulux Natural Hints Barley White
Dulux Natural Hints Almond White
B & Q Soft Sunlight
B & Q Soft Cream

The B & Q Soft Sunlight is definitely the closest but I would need Dulux to colour match it- as someone else on here said, painting with B & Q own paint is like painting with milk.

Budget is for Crown or Dulux so no F&B I'm afraid.

Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks

B&Q will mix you the colour and the 'neutral' colours from Dulux (mix range) have some lovely buttery creams.

The paint mixes are a tiny bit darker than the card so go for one or two shades lighter.

Take in a sample of the color you want (from anything - fabrics, a picture, whatever, and they will mix Dulux up for you.

Just Do It

Having faffed about for TWO YEARS over painting the hall because of paradox-of-choice-colour-agony I went for 'ItWillHaveToDo Green' from the Dulux Collection - and it looks fantastic! There may be a more perfect colour out there but this looks a billion times more sophisticated and interesting than TenYearOldMagnolia, and looks all fresh and lovely.

As one of my old clients used to say 'Don't let the great be the enemy of the good'.

Sounds like you are looking for the same colour that I am...yesterday I tried two Wickes ones - Cream and Harvest Moon, but they are both a bit pale. I have been looking at Farrow and Ball as it's quite a small area but I can't quite see a suitable candidate there either. Mine's to look nice and farmhousey with my quarry tiles in the entrance hall.

B and q rice cake is lovely and everyone assumes its F and B!

LadyThompson · 07/07/2010 10:06

Thanks Noddy, will check that out. I love Faz and Baz but the creams look a bit dingy.

notasize10yetbutoneday · 07/07/2010 10:12

Faz & Baz!

Will try rice cake, thanks Noddy. Good tip about taking in something for them to match off and also the paint being a couple shades darker than the test card.

Definitely no time for procrastination here- decorator coming next Friday!

Going to B & Q tomorrow night so will report back after yet more testing.

twisted bamboo 4 is pretty near - dulux

bubbleymummy · 07/07/2010 21:50

We found some lovely colours in the 1852 range from b&q. Vellum parchment is a lovely warm cream colour without being too yellowy

notasize10yetbutoneday · 08/07/2010 07:58

Thanks all, will look for those at B&Q tonight.

Well 14 tester pots later and I can now finally announce a winner...drumroll please....

Crown- 'Golden hue' by a whisker
Dulux Daffodil White was a very very close second, just that bit too yellowy.

Also tried were:
Crown Biscuit- too beige
Crown Pale damask- nice, very creamy, not what I was looking for though
Dulux 'Light and Space- Coastal Glow- too white- did give nice shimmer though
Dulux- Twisted Bamboo 3 and Quilted Calico 3 were virtually identical and both nice but on the peachy side of cream rather than yellow.

Anyway, I now have 14 tester pots which are nearly all full as I only used a small amount. If anyone wants them I will send for just the cost of the postage. Or any suggestios for what to do with 14 tester pots of varying shades of cream paint are welcome!
