Duck egg colour scheme and which colour sofas?

Ok im not sure what to do, in an ideal world i would like to have cream or white coloured sofas but its not practical and would last 5 mins in our house.

We are a bit broke after spending quite a bit on our new house but desperately need new sofas, I have seen two pairs on ebay both gorgeous tradtional (am hankering after a Laura Ashley mortimer style sofa but know i cant afford one) shaped sofas, one is real leather but is described as terracotta but looks a more light tan colour in the photos, this one would be ideal because of its wipe clean properties the other one looks to be a darkish brown, its been professionally reupholsterd (sp) in a faux suede.

I have duck egg patterned curtains and a duck egg silk box pelmet and a plain duck egg painted feature wall in my living room all of the other walls are white - which sofa should i go for that will tie in ok and wont look too colour horrific with my current colour scheme.

I have see on the internet both terracotta and duck egg put together and it looked ok, again i have seen in some laura Ashley style duck egg schemed rooms a darkish brown leather sofa and that seemed to look ok too but i dont want to make a mistake.

The terracotta one appeals from a practicality point of view but i am worried the colour just wont go at all (cool and warm) or the other faux leather one is such a lovely shape and will look brand new but is a dark brownish colour which again might not go? Any budding interior designers out there who can advise please? I would be very grateful. TIA

Just going off your descrioptions of the colours I would be doubtful as to whether terracotta/light tan would go with duck egg blue. I would say dark brown would go very nicely with it.

If the sofa's are a good price and you really like them, get them and change the wall colour and curtains too if you can/want to?

TheMoonOnAStick · 06/07/2010 09:10

I thought dark brown straight away too. I love those two colours together. Duck egg is currently my favourite colour!

Jacaqueen · 06/07/2010 09:55

I would also go for the dark brown.

Laura Ashley have upto 50% off some sofas at the moment. Not sure which ones though. I would try and buy the best quality sofa that you can afford as cheaper ones can sometimes be a false economy as they can look crap really quickly. Though I do understand the dilema of not having the funds avaliable.

I misread your post and thought one was terracotta and one was brown being sold together. If you want to keep the duck egg, then i'd go for the dark brown.

I need to keep the duck egg as the curtains and Pelmet were really expensive (back when we had a bit more money) so its got to be the duck egg and white wood furniture thats already in my room. I am veering towards the dark brown too, i have two beautiful antique pears style prints above the current sofa and the frame on them is dark brown so i think it will probably go perfectly.

I would love to buy Laura Ashley sofas but i just cant afford it at the moment, even the second hand ones on ebay are still pretty pricey so im sticking with a lovely tradtional shape and nice feet.

The only downside to the brown ones are the cushion backs wheras i prefer a more formal back (i think the cushions can make the sofa look messy as its what we currently have).Im also a bit wary of Faux suede as i dont want it to look horribly cheap, im hoping that its nice - the seller is sending me a swatch today so ill see by that, but he reupholsters lots of stuff and it seems to be really nice too.
Thanks for the advice all

You can get 2 ikea ektorp white sofas with a traditional back for about £550.they are fully washable and quite hardy and I have used them in several house renovations and they look very elegant. You could always change them in teh future when you have a bit more money.I think white is lovely with duck egg but brown leather a bit dated.

rosieposey · 06/07/2010 11:08

I would love white noddy and i do love the ektorp sofas its just my DH doesnt think they are that comfortable when we have sat on them in Ikea the other thing is they have washable covers which i also dont mind but again DH says they are a bit scruffy once you have washed them? Any tips on making sure they dont get too creased if you have to wash them (which i would have to frequently)?

Have you got a link to the sofas? I would say dark brown, but like the sound of the leather and more formal back.

rosieposey · 07/07/2010 18:30

I decided to meet DH at Ikea after he got out of work last night and we are sitting on White Ektorp sofas tonight i figured that i would go with Noddy's idea as they are the shape and back that i want, i got the two seater with attached chaise longue and a three seater.

The white is already showing up the dog, kids and baby detritus but im quite chuffed at getting them all for just under £600. If im honest as broke as we are (we moved 6 months ago and are all spent out) i was only going to pay half that and get some more in a year or so but im glad we got these as if we buy new covers every so often they might actually last a while.

Fantastic. I thought that was a great idea of noddy.

You have to love Ikea for getting furniture quickly. I recently bought a couple of the Karlstad sofas for our holiday home as the ones I had originally wanted had a 12 week wait for delivery. I also went for the white but will probably buy another set of covers in another colour.

noddyholder · 08/07/2010 11:42

I'm glad you got them I plan to buy some more when we move next month I actually like them once washed as they have a more worn vintage look and once they have been sat on a few times the creases fall out.You can get some amazing covers for them aswell at bemz

I'd stick with the duck egg and dark brown, with off-white or ivory. I'd steer clear of faux-suede if you have kids (been there!!). have you thought of putting some bold touches in- I've seen red and duck egg working really well together.
