Is it a posh word for a conservatory?

OP posts:
OliviaMumsnet · 05/07/2010 21:55

Yup

IMoveTheStars · 05/07/2010 21:56

A poncy wooden greenhouse attached to your house

Somewhere that your plants can live in the winter, so they survive frost. Not for sitting in.

NoseyNooNoo · 05/07/2010 22:54

I saw a programme once that said that an orangery has brickwork on the bottom half.
I've only come across these 'oop north' but don't know anyone who admits to having an orangery - is is just estate agents who use the term?

tvfriend · 05/07/2010 22:59

My parents have one! Basically a conservatory but the roof is different apparently .
There's is lovely. No brickwork and we definately sit in it (Biggest room in/on(?) the house)

funnysinthegarden · 05/07/2010 23:05

a beautiful enormous greenhouse, big enough for orange trees to grow in!

IMoveTheStars · 05/07/2010 23:10

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orangery

Yes, I know wiki doesn't have all the answers, but I can't be arsed to do a proper google about.

bloody hell

The Orangery at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, now used as a restaurant:

I'd never heard of them until my cousin, who lives 'oop north', began to boast about the 'orangery' on her new house.

Orangery in stately home, yes.

Stuck to the side of a semi, guffaw.

Alouiseg · 05/07/2010 23:40

More substantial than a conservatory. Just dontvget Amdega to quote for one

IMoveTheStars · 05/07/2010 23:42

how much Alouiseg?

Alouiseg · 05/07/2010 23:48

£87,500. Utter piss taking tosspotts . It will be 6m x 4 m. I winced when we opened the quote which doesn't even include the flooring.

IMoveTheStars · 05/07/2010 23:50

Woooooaah.

that's impressive.. you could build a whole house for less than that!

Alouiseg · 05/07/2010 23:52

Yup, dodgy chancers, some poor sap will pay them that though.

elsiepiddock · 05/07/2010 23:55

Poncetastic word for a conservatory, ime.

I work in building control. We always arf when we get an application for an orangery and it's a small crappy thing on the back of a semi. Delusions of grandeur!

Alouiseg · 06/07/2010 07:19

They are different structures Elsie.

elsiepiddock · 07/07/2010 22:37

I know they're different! But pretty much every application I deal with for an 'orangery' is actually just a conservatory in a posh road .

Alouiseg · 07/07/2010 23:50

Mine won't be! Its a proper orangery.

IMoveTheStars · 08/07/2010 10:42

ponce

Housemum · 08/07/2010 17:58

It's a conservatory with a university degree. Those with a few GCSEs are garden rooms, if they fail it all they're lean-tos.

IMoveTheStars · 08/07/2010 18:05

Where does a summer house fit into all that?

HerHonesty · 08/07/2010 19:19

a conservatory for twats who have too much time on their hands and delusions of grandeur.

IMoveTheStars · 08/07/2010 20:47
Hmm
Alouiseg · 08/07/2010 20:55

I prefer a light filled room with a more structured base and roofline to a conservatory. Possbly to be used as a large balcony for a bedroom.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/07/2010 20:59

I thought they were big heated rooms that stately homes had so that back int' day the owners could stroll around and admire their collection of tropical plants?
