Very dull question about white paint.

Can anyone recommend a decent brilliant white emulsion, please?

The Homebase paint that I tried to use is pathetic and I would have better coverage flicking rice pudding at the wall.

In the past I have used 'Once' but shall rename it 'Thrice'. Are there any paints which actually stick to the wall?

Thank you.

The only pure whites I have used are Wickes trade white for new plaster and Dulux Light & Space - neither of which are probably what you are after.

In terms of major (but not poncy brands) I rate Dulux over Crown for coverage so maybe try Dulux brilliant white?

Another vote for Dulux brilliant white here.

Thank you

I think the problem may be with the wall itself as thin slithers of plaster were coming off onto the roller. It may be distemper or something? It is an old wall.

I got some Dulux and will try again.

Plaster shouldn't be coming off on your roller. I can't see that any paint's going to do well with that.

Is it an old house? An old wall?

SwansEatQuince · 05/07/2010 16:48

Yes, it is very old.

I stripped the paper from another room and the decorators had signed the date plus all their names.- 1933.

The room that I am trying to paint has crumbly plaster with what looks like bits of hair in it. The surface is a nightmare to paint as the original paint slakes off.
I should paint the whole room with a PVA solution or something which stablilises the paint but am slowly losing the will to live.

Why dont you put up a thick grade lining paper first, then paint.

Dulux trade matt white is great

funnysinthegarden · 06/07/2010 22:34

farrow and ball, but put lining paper up first by the sounds of your wall

I had never heard of horsehair plaster until we moved in here. Apparently the hairs are really chopped up horse hairs. Ours dated from 1901 and lots just fell off the walls when we stripped the wallpaper - I can't imagine ever being able to paint over it. We had to have it reskimmed with repair jobs where you could see back to the brick. Unexpected expense, but so worth it now...

if you need to get it replastered and tis an old wall, lime plaster is very good and lets the wall breathe. Prob quite pricey though. We lived in a 16th Century cottage once and it had lime plaster walls, they smelt really nice!
