Seller wants us to pay for fuel in oil tank?

Hi, we're in the process of buying a house and I got a list from the seller's solicitor of what is included in the sale. They have indicated they want a couple of hundred quid for the oil in tank, which they had filled up a few weeks ago. Is that the done thing or are they have a laaarf (since I presume they can't take the oil with them?)

Anyone had similar?

Thanks

Tell them to take it with them.

CMOTdibbler · 01/07/2010 14:34

I think it may be the done thing as they are effectively paying your heating bills for the next few months

DrSpechemin · 01/07/2010 14:35

Usual ime

Lauriefairycake · 01/07/2010 14:40

yes it's the done thing. They can't leave you with none as it affects the pipes or summat. Check the invoice that they have though.

Totally usual - oil ain't cheap!

I would pay for it. Unless you're planning to change the heating system and won't need the oil then you will be using it. It would be more annoying IMO if they had left you with the bare minimum in the tank as you would then have to organise for the tank to be filled yourself.

It's likely to be a vanishingly small percentage of all the other costs of moving house anyway, so not worth having an argument and risk losing the house over.

it costs about £500 to fill our oil tank! so it is reasonable to expect you to pay... most tanks have a remote device (well ours does) to tell you approx how full it is. if you don't buy it you'll have to buy it from the oil company... and yes you can drain the tank and store it in a temporary tank (ie they could take it with them...). whether they actually would is a diferent matter..

nowwearefour · 01/07/2010 15:59

totally reasonable to ask you to pay for it. it isnt like they have already used it. you'd only have to pay to fill it anyway. you could negotiate on the price per litre but unless it is silly money i would just pay what they are asking.

OK, thanks for feedback - I'll pay up!
