I hadn't even heard of window film until Mumsnet! But now (I think) it could be the solution for a problem in our new house.

We have a longish stairway window (37cm wide by 94cm long) which looks directly at next door's front door. A roller blind or such wouldn't work as they would still be able to see in the bottom half, and I hate vertical blinds. So I am comig round to window film, but I have some questions before I buy.

  1. Will it work on disgusting brown upvc windows? All the pictures on websites (Brume, Purlfrost etc) seem to be of sash windows

  2. The stairway isn't particularly light- is it going to make it really dark?

  3. Is it easy for someone with no coordination whatsoever to fit?

4)If I make a hash of don't like it, is it easily removed?

  1. Is it a case of 'you get what you pay for' and so should I pay extra for Brume etc?

Thanks!

You can use film on any window, pvc or sash as it covers the glass not the frame.
I have used it in our previous house but had it installed as I didnt want to do it myself as it sounded too fiddly, not sure if its easy to get off or not.
If you look in your local Yellow Pages under galzing you will find people who do it so you coudl ask them for quotes/advice.

It doesnt make much difference to light levels but will mean there is no view out.

Never used Brume so not sure but I do remember thinking it was overpriced.

You could do a trial run with a piece of plain voile pinned over the glass as this will give a similar effect. I think in your case, given you dont like the window frame, Id consider using a voile roman blind fixed outside whe window to hide the window and view. You can buy these ready made, eg (sroll down)
