would you buy this house?

Have just gone under offer, and now looking for somewhere to buy. Have seen a house I like, but the fourth bedroom is only eight by seven and the garden backs onto a busy railway line - my question is, how much would that put you off?

What are you planning to use the 4th bedroom for? If a bedroom for a strapping teenager, yes, its too small.

When you visited the house, could you hear the trains?

If it was me, in making a decision I would also factor in how much the house was- ie if paying top whack you want it to be near as perfect as possible, and also how long we would be staying there- is it the 'forever' house or a temporary move until the next one?

no. thats not a really a bedroom and trainlines only likely to get busier.

Fourth bedroom is for a four year old so I thought maybe we could make it work. I couldn't really hear a train, but I could see it. We are under the Heathrow flight path here in any event (only moving down the road) so used to noise. Maybe I could plant some trees?

The 4 year old wont be 4 for ever though. How long would you be likely to stay there?
I suppose it depends if everyhting else about the house is absolutely perfect but thoseare two quite major 'things' to be honest.

Is there any chance you are wanting it to be the one because you are under offer? Once ours had sold we did get a bit panicky and try and convince ourselves that houses with fairly large drawbacks would 'be ok' and of course they wouldn't, it was just the panic of needing to find somewhere to live. it took us 3 weeks to find 'the one' and now we are moved in I am so so glad we kept looking.

I stayed in a 3 storey flat in London once, which backed directly onto a railway. The trains started at 5.30am and went past every half hour. The window (if open) was shuddered closed, and (if closed) shuddered open.

After a week, I never noticed the trains going by at all.

I think you are right and I am panicking because I am under offer. I also think I would not hear the trains after a while and perhaps the four year old and the cupboard sized room are perhaps the bigger issues!

Trainline would put me off. Bedroom wouldn't if there was potential to reconfigure or extend.
