Kitchen advice needed

Hello, we are finally getting a new extension and kitchen after years of saving up for one. However, it's not going to be a huge kitchen and I need to make sure that I plan it well. The architect has suggested that I have a cooker, and sink against the main wall, with a couple of long cupboards either side, one of which will house an oven. I will also have an island. However, there isn't much worktop space against the wall, so it seems that I will have to use the island for food prep as won't be able to do much of that next to the cooker. Is that a good idea, or should I think about putting the sink in the island? But if I do that will I then end up splashing water all over the floor? Similarly, if I put the cooker on the island I'll end up splashing food all over the place.

I am really rubbish at this kind of thing so would be really grateful for any advice, thoughts.

thanks very much !

Have you got a third side to the kitchen? I've got a kind of U-shape with tall cupboards and oven/microwave etc. along the wall the sink on the 'shortest' side and the hob on the third side, opposite the ovens, which is also a kind of island (in that there is a 'breakfast bar' type thing facing the hob). If that makes sense. Have you spoken to a kitchen 'planner', ime they are quite good and were definitely better at planning the kitchen layout than our architect was! I think you definitely need prep space by the hob & sounds like if the sink is next to the hob that might not work out. Our old kitchen was like that with too little space between the sink and hob for chopping / ingredients /any kind of prep for stuff you want to cook on the hob. Are you having a combined cooker & hob? Are you having an extractor fan?

Not sure if the architect is the person to give this advice why dont you approach a bespoke kitchen designer. They will give you the pitfalls of every design.

You can book a (usually) free desing appt with various kitchen suppliers. Take the plans with measurements to the designer and see what they suggest.
