Has anyone painted their stairs?

similar to those in the Dulux advert?

We have had no carpet on the stairs for about a month now, so was looking for alternative ideas.

Thanks

Can I sit here and watch your answers please?

By all means, catinthehat2. Let's hope I get some

yep, I've got painted stairs.
I haven't seen the Dulux ad though. What are they like?
This is a very old cottage with lots of exposed beams, so I painted my stairs in greige (F&B Old White) with a brown runner (F&B Drab) It's floor paint so lasts quite well.

I haven't seen the advert but do have a painted bottom stair which is carpetless due to an incident involving cats and a puppy.

It's just done in white satinwood or something and needs a varnish or something over it to make it harder wearing really.

I haven't seen the dulux ad.

We have got painted stairs. The steps themslevs we have stained, the wood. The riser bits, and a 3 inch or so runner on each step, and the bannisters etc are painted white.

It has worked really well, a lot better than carper which used to get filthy (it used to be white carpet). Just don't go running down the stairs with socks on, you will slip and tumble to teh bottom.

Thanks Posh.

I've always liked the idea of painted wood stairs - but don't they seem a bit noisy without the carpet, or do you get used to it/make people wear slippers?

Poshpaws · 14/06/2010 14:57

Not after the exact style of the advert, it's just that it promotes painting your stairs with Dulux paint .

How did your house function whilst the paint was drying? Our lavatory is upstairs so not sure how to protect the stairs from household traffic.

(could you paint one side, let it dry, then the other. Then all the stairs wouldn't be out of action at once)

GetOrfMoiLand · 14/06/2010 15:07

To be honest we weren't living in the house when the stairs were painted - house had been flooded. So I would do it over the weekend and try and stay at a friend's house or something, as you wouldn't really want to walk on it until it was boen dry, and that takes hours iirc.

No, don't notice the noise, but we don't have carpet anywhere in the house anyway, so to avoid the stampiness and mess we always take our shoes off indoors anyway and wear slippers.

If you have cats or dogs it is far easier to clean. I remember hoovering cat hair off the stairs every day which was a chore. Now we just sweep and mop.

DD's asthma is a lot better as well now we don't have carpets or curtains.

Poshpaws · 14/06/2010 15:45

Sounds like a plan, then. I have found the stairs a lot easier to maintain now we don't have carpet on them. It's just that they look ugly as it is the original 'wood then white paint on the sides' look.

Thanks again and hope this thread has given catinthehat2 some ideas as well .

paint one, don't paint one, paint one. Walk on non painted. Paint the non painted when dry.

catinthehat2 · 14/06/2010 16:05

fanks!

DaisymooSteiner · 14/06/2010 16:09

Our neighbours didn't have any carpet for 6 months a while back and my god, the noise! It sounded like thunder every time someone went upstaris!
