I only wanted a new loo seat

So I bought one this morning - looks simple enough to fit. DH has gone away for the weekend, so it's down to me.

But I just can't get the old fittings off! I have removed the seat and lid (should make life easier for DS1 and DS2) but I just cannot get the plastic nut things off the rather rusty bolts. I have completely mangled them now, with a combination of wrench and stanley knife - with a good measure of WD40 thrown in.

I have 20 people coming to lunch on Sunday, and this is our only loo. Any suggestions of what to try?

Hacksaw if you don't need to keep them?

purpleturtle · 11/06/2010 15:04

Hacksaw!
Brilliant!

Thanks. Will give it a go.

Obviously, it would help if we had a hacksaw. The saw we do have is a bit long, as it's such a confined space.

Oh why did I decide today would be the day to do this?

because you've got lots of people coming around... I always start stupid diy jobs thinking I'll make the house look nice before people come - it never quite works like that!

have you got a strong sereated (sp?) kitchen knife? that might do the job...

Fizzylemonade · 11/06/2010 17:05

ring a good friend and see if they have a hacksaw or pop to local DIY shop if time permits.

I have just done mine on all 3 toilets and it was a nightmare.

manipulate body so you have an extremity stuck down the toilet. Make sure you have phone within reach. when fire brigade come to get you out ask them to remove loo seat.

I'll bring the camping bucket!

fruitshoots - it might have come to that! Great suggestion

In fact, I was a step ahead of lindsell, and have sacrificed a kitchen knife (didn't like it much anyway). Had that failed, I was going to beg a hacksaw from a neighbour, but I just know that he would have insisted on doing offered to do the job for me, and that was not the point, really. Thanks for understanding, fizzy!

Oh, and did I mention, that it's taken 3 different loo seat purchases today, before I've finally found one that's not broken?! First one was missing a couple of those support thingies on the bottom of the seat. Replaced it with more expensive one (had been first choice, but out of stock in first store). That broke as I tried to fit it, so I decided not to risk it again and bought a 3rd kind.

Hallelujah! Now have a beautifully fitted new loo seat. And a day's worth of jobs left undone. (Thought this would be a quick one)

Thanks all for your suggestions. And PandaG - you can leave the bucket at home.

And that would be indicative of the type of day I'm having.

Oooo lurvely, thanks!

Think I might save it for a bit later - in all the excitement forgot to heat the oven to cook tea, but it's been on 45 minutes now, so will soon be hot enough to bung pizza in

Feel free to have yours now, though. Don't let me stop you!
