Now we are lucky in that my dh does all this himself...but my first reaction was...christ how bloody big is the radiator?
And why would you pay someone to make the wall nice and smooth behind the radiator where you can't see it?
Why don't you just change the radiator?

DinahRod · 09/06/2010 21:02

Our double rad. was £100 to buy.

Are you paying both a plumber and a plasterer? Hot water system need draining?

Maybe £250 all in?

DeeYouEllEll · 09/06/2010 21:26

yes system needs draining aparently

we would ahve to buy rad too

we are in london

depends on rad - I have just brought some that were £125 each (but tall and v narrow), you can get them ALOT cheaper.

Plumbing shouldn't be that much.

ThinkingAboutSchemes · 09/06/2010 22:53

We've been quoted £150 labour plus £35 parts plus cost of new radiator. This includes draining the system & putting in chemicals to help get rid of sludge.

We took our radiator off ourselves so we could strip the current wallpaper behind it. As long as you have values on the rad it's fairly easy to do - we have a big book of diy and it gave full instructions so you might find some instructions online.

Then just get a plasterer - shouldn't be too big a job

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 10/06/2010 09:59

Dp (who does this kind of thing for a living) says £200 - £250. But wonders why you need the wall behind plastering and is this why the quote is higher?

Also depends how much the radiator is.

WowOoo · 10/06/2010 10:02

If it's a really good radiator and he'll do a fab job I still think it's high but not that high. Depends on size of the wall etc.

sharbieinbackofthequattro · 10/06/2010 10:08

I guessed £400 without looking and didn't know you were in London. So sounds fair to me.

bluecardi · 10/06/2010 10:09

Could you reuse the radiator - flush it through & paint it.

DeeYouEllEll · 11/06/2010 07:33

cheers for answers so far! The current awful rad is plastered onto the wall.. its a weird flat box thing that would rip half the wall off whne we remove it

OP posts:
Pannacotta · 11/06/2010 09:09

SOunds quite high but not too awful given the work needed.
Get two more quotes and then you'll have a better idea...

IsItMeOr · 11/06/2010 09:19

Sounds a lot given that you're also buying the radiator. We had a smallish radiator changed, he bought the new one, and it was around £100 all in iirc. In London. Didn't need to drain the system (why would they? Don't you have valves at the end of the radiator to lock the water off??).

Plastering obviously extra.

If you're South West London you could always try seeing whether the nice South African plumber, Conrad, who did ours could change it for you. His number's 079808 74537. He's a plumber, so wouldn't plaster. We actually got recommended to him by this guy, who might do the plastering for you. And while not being a specialised plasterer, would presumably be fine for an area you're not going to be able to see very well? We've been very happy with the work he's done for us - no plastering though. Turns up on time, works hard to stick within the time he estimated and doesn't charge for going over by a few minutes. Polite and friendly.

HTH.

Pannacotta · 11/06/2010 09:54

Think you need to drain the system if you have a combi boiler, otherwise think you can leave it and just drain the specific radiator.

cybbo · 11/06/2010 12:38

Thanks very much for all that

ChasingSquirrels · 11/06/2010 19:54

following on from earlier post, just been quoted £120 to fit one of the rads (which wasn't in building work quote).
This is after he fitted the other three - umm'd and arr'd, said half a days work (what - only took you just over half a day to fit 2, and move and fit another 3 - with quite a lot of pipe work on two of those) - £120.

ChasingSquirrels · 11/06/2010 19:55

that was just taking up floor, doing pipework, fitting rad and putting floor back down. Not plastering.
