Noisy neighbours thread #37

About six months ago a group of 'young people' moved into the ground floor flat in the garden which is at right angles to mine. They have people round and are drinking in the garden and shouting every night. The gardens are not massive - only about 20-30ft wide with walls that are only about 1.5m high and their garden is only about 40ft from mine. They don't generally go on too late but it's just relentless shouting, raucous laughter and music which means that I can't sit in the garden or have windows open because they just make a constant racket. I did hear a neighbour asking them very politely to keep the noise down one evening and they were pretty rude to her. I think they assume they have the law on their side.

Is that right? If they don't carry on beyond 11pm there's nothing anyone can do? I stood on a chair this evening to see exactly which garden it was and they jeered at me

No, I don't think they have the law of their side at all. See here - you need to call Environmental Health.

Is it a rental property? You could have a word with the landlord if so - they tend not to want any trouble with neighbours. If not, afraid other than bargaining with them I don't think there is much you can do. My Mum has the same problem as she lives in student area of Bristol - she can rarely sit out or get to sleep on a nice evening!

I would assume it's a rental just because there's obviously a lot of them that live there and I can't imagine people of their age can afford flats round here (I live in quite an expensive part of London). But I have no idea how I can find out who the landlord is.

I shall keep a record Hassled, that's a good idea.

Right now they're playing a guitar and chatting quietly and that's fine. But they do an awful lot of shouting. Lots of 'OI FUCK YOU' type stuff which was frightening my DC before bedtime apart from anything else. Luckily our flat is double glazed so once we're inside we can't really hear them but it's not much fun feeling like we can't use the garden.

They sound like they're at a football match most of the time. I wonder if I can record them?
