Do you need planning permission to create french doors?

We recently bought a house that needs a lot of work. The windows, roof, floors, and garden are completed, but are now looking into knocking through the rear wall to install french doors that lead out to the garden. WE found a great price online with doubleglazingontheweb, but I am not really sure what to do next? Do we need planning permission? A building survey to make sure the wall is secure? DH wants to install these himself, so we are trying to keep costs as low as possible.... Thanks!

Planning permission not required (assuming it's not a listed building - in which case listed building consent will be needed). You would need building regs approvla though to make sure the RSJ is strong enough to take the load as you're knocking out a structural wall.

not needed unless conservation area or listed, but you do need building regs but a builder will sort these for you.
