Fitting a curtain to a wardrobe instead of a door

We have a desperate need for more hanging space but can't fit another/bigger wardrobe.

However there is a small space in the corner of our second bedroom which could fit the smallest Ikea Pax wardrobes, however we couldn't fit a hinged door as it would hit the windowsill.

Am thinking about maybe hanging a curtain wire across the top of the carcass and adding a lightweight curtain that can be pulling across. Has anyone done something like this and did it work?? I realise that it won't look perfect but our house is a bit 'artistic' so not worried about that

Could you not fit a rail directly between two walls for clothes, with a curtain in front? I think that look is better than the wardrobe-with-a-curtain look.

Thanks Bonsoir, it's a good idea but we've no spare alcoves left and no other walls that would work with hanging rails.

We've the tiniest house going - would love to get rid of all of our furniture and start again with everything custom built

Yes, have done this and it looked fine. But I would suggest that you don't use wire, that will sag, but instead get a curtain track. You can get skinny ones for lightweight curtains, and fix them to the wardrobe frame. Then, you need a curtain with a header tape, and hooks. You can fix the curtain so that it opens from one side of the wardrobe, so that it's easy to draw tidily across.

ange8 thanks, hadn't considered the sagging issue.....

I did it in the nursery using some nice Cath Kidson fabric, it looks nice I think - I did use wire and it doesn't sag much but is not a very wide space or heavy fabric.

Thanks for the input badkitty. Will discuss with DH tonight and see if he agress with the idea

I've done something similar before with a curtain and curtain wire. I'm assuming you are meaning the plastic coated curtain wire that you stretch and attach to screw hooks?

The curtain shouldn't sag if the wire is taut enough. Or you could try a Spring Tension rod.

Thanks Deux
