today i viewed a house, completetly unexpected but it is a lovely house. Here is the problem,

we have lived in our current house for 8 years and have spent over 100K transforming it. it is now 5 beds 2 bathrooms. It has a tiny back garden adn we are unable to buy additional land (thats a whole other story) but we like the village in which we live in.

This house is 5 mins away in same village but better road, it is in just over 0.5 acre of land, only has 3 beds and a tiny upstairs. Downstairs is lovely although not finished as builder/owner is still working on it. He says it will be finished to my spec etc. this house will cost an additional 110K.

what would you do? buy the new haouse with land or stay in same house yearnig for more outside space but happy with house?

Unless you are looking for a project and willing to invest in it, why move? If it was a bargain and you were happy to start again from scratch, then fair enough. But that doesn't come across in your post.

I think you're playing house-porn

thisisyesterday · 23/05/2010 21:39

so, you;d be spending an extra £110k to get a much smaller house but more land?

i don't think i would do it personally...

morethanyoubargainfor · 23/05/2010 21:42

well the upstairs of the house is smaller but downstairs is just as large but more usable IYKWIM. The land is the main pull TBH. Its what i want.

I feel it is quite a bargain for what it is, if it was 1 mile down the road it would cost atleast 75K extra. I don't thinkit would be a project as such as all the work has been done, and the owner assures me it would be finished and i woul;d have a budget and an input in fixtures and fittings etc. So it woiuld just be decorating aan dfurnishing or am i being naive?

But won't you need another 2 bedrooms?

LostArtofKeepingASecret · 23/05/2010 21:44

Well, I would love more land than I have now, so I can understand where you are comming from.

Is the new houser big enough for you, or would you need to spend £££ on extending?
I'd only move if I could afford it.

GrendelsMum · 23/05/2010 21:50

Well I'd do it, because I'd love 1/2 acre of garden, but do you need more than 3 bedrooms? As if you need to buy a new build and then start building, it sounds rather less attractive...

morethanyoubargainfor · 23/05/2010 21:50

don't need extra two rooms no, as they are spare at the moment but put in to use the space. We can afford it and the house is better planned out downstairs fo rus, we only have one ds 7 and we foster one other child so 3 beds is enough.

its not a new build, it is a old cottage that has been extended and renovated within an inch of its life! I do want garden but usable IYKWIM, it is my dream to become self sufficent or atleast 80% an di feel this in this house i woul dbe able to achieve this.

How likely is something else to come up that you can afford if you say no to this one?

Can you haggle with the builder

thisisyesterday · 23/05/2010 21:56

in that case go for it

PrettyCandles · 23/05/2010 21:56

Then go for it.

morethanyoubargainfor · 23/05/2010 22:02

cargirl probably very slim. only saw this as it is next door but one to friends house, our house isn't on the market as yet.

think haggling is to be done TBH DH even wants to see if the builder wants to buy this house as it is cheaper and that is the reason he is selling, he brought it to keep an slive in but got carried away with the refurb. Think he is selling at a loss.

I would do it, but for me the garden and situation is the most important part of a house.

CarGirl · 23/05/2010 22:09

Go for it, definately - part exchange could be fab.

morethanyoubargainfor · 23/05/2010 22:12

wouldn't it just!
