DH has new job 160 miles away which he has started although is home for part of the week. House sold quicker than we expected (good) but it is all happening quicker than we expected (scary).

Am generally SAHM but do some intensive work (can you see where this is going? . Will be at work for 8 days out of the next 24 including two Saturdays and a Sunday. Am working from 2nd to 6th June inclusive. Will only get paid for work if I am there but considering dropping one or two if I feel it would help.

My mum and dad are coming to do child care when I am working and dh is not here a d am hoping I don't need to use them as organising people.

Have lined up removals companies to come and quote for our business. What else do I need to do and when?At least we are moving inyo rented house and start tenancy on that next week so that is one thing to not worry about.

Argh and this weekend is v busy too. Am normally anti social. Why have I develped a social life now?

All posts welcomed even ones saying "calm down you silly woman".

Have just remembered that car inurance runs out on 7th June. Obviously

Def get the movers to pack you. Then all you need to do is pack some bags with the essentials for a few days, make a list of your utility suppliers and their numbers, organise mail redirection (do it online), and you will be sorted.

Last time we moved, we thought it was all off due to buyers messing around and our vendors pulling out if it wouldn't happen, so we only had 10 days notice that it was all happening, and were both at work ft until the last day. It was fine

Thank you

I think I don't want my mum and dad to get dragged into doing stuff (even supervising packers) while they have travelled 200 miles to look after our children. Will check how soon in advance packers come and pack you and hope dh is here rather than 160 miles away.

They don't need supervision - I've gone out both times we have been packed as you just get in the way. Our move was a similar length, and they packed us on the Thursday then came back for the last bits like our beds on Friday morning before driving up. We could have stayed at a hotel that night and not had them come back.

Not sure how old your children are, but could you book them and your parents into a hotel so that they are clear of the packing ?

Move is on a Monday so might they pack on a Friday?DH will be back then and he might take children to his mum and dad's house to escape!

Also need to freecycle fridge freezer and washing machine and dishwasher and work out when to do that. And piano hopefully.

Think I need to make a list rather than typing it all here lol

yes, I think they would do that as they can leave the lorry in their yard over the weekend. Tell them when they come to quote that this is what you want them to do.

Pick one time that you want all the freecycle stuff to go, and put that on your listing as 'must be picked up between x and y on the 4th of June' so that you don't have lots of arrangements to make

You are helping me to calm down very well - thank you

Stuff to do other than packing:

  • set up postal redirect service with Royal Mail. After you've moved, inform everyone (bank, mobile phone co, etc) of new address. Some co's need you to confirm this in writing.
  • tell your council, water, gas and elec that you are going to be moving. On the day of the move, take final meter readings, then after the move, give those to gas and elec co's so they can send you a final bill.
  • if you want Sky in the new place, and it doesn't have it, you might want to start lining that up now, otherwise can be a bit of a long wait for an installer.
  • cancel home and contents insurance from date of move - or see if you can transfer it to new house. (NOTE some contents insurance covers you for breakages during move, as long as all your stuff is packed and moved by professionals. Worth checking the small print before buying moving co's insurance.)
  • This sounds daft, and obv isn't crucial, but maybe take a few photos of the place before you start packing up, so you have memories of how it was?

Oh yes and BREATHE!

Have calmed down a bit now . Had another removals company come round to quote on Friday and they will be able to pack on the Saturday and then do the final things on the Monday morning before getting to new house later on that day (a different company suggested this was impossible )

DH has organised for the children to stay at his mum and dad's house from Friday until Sunday so the packing will happen with them not there (and me as well ).

Am still surprised at speed of all this - house only went on the market at the end of March and here we are about to move in 3 weeks time
