how much cheaper is project managing your own refurb

We?ve started receiving quotes for a complete refurbishment of the house we are about to buy and they are a bit eye watering. We can still afford it, but it will just mean holding off on a lot of other plans we were hoping to have (like, taking holiday, ever going out for a meal again, etc).
I was just wondering if anyone had any experience in project managing a refurb themselves. Do you think we could save a significant amount of money doing that? I am freelance, so I can just take on less work to give me time to do it, but that?s only really sensible if I?ll be saving quite a bit, iykwim.

So far though, we?ve had a few companies quote for doing all the works and when they break down their quote, the cost of electrics, for instance, is almost double what it was when I just had our electricians come in to quote. If getting one firm to do all the work adds 40% on to the cost then I am certainly up for project managing lots of firms, but I mean, that just seems crazy right?

Any tips or experience from the lovely mumsnetters would be v. useful...

I have always done this myself -I think its just a waste of money paying one company to do everything - they can charge whatever they like. But if you would earn more money working than you would save by this, do the work. Its really time-consuming commissioning jobs and people are not always reliable and it would probably be done much more slowly. However if you know a friendly furnishings shop/builders merchants they can usually point you in the right direction. Its also useful to know an "handiman" who can do all the little jobs that need doing nand doesn't charge too much.
