Sitting in dust and chaos that seems to have gone on forever can someone who has survived a kitchen refit reassure me it will end!!

We are going through the same - work started 12 April and should have taken two and a half weeks, and we are now in the fourth week. If the builder had told us four weeks in the beginning we would have been fine because we could have been mentally prepared. Things got a bit tense last week but we had a chat with him and basically got reassurance that he would finish our kitchen before starting his next one (we were worried he'd be spending half his time elsewhere) but at the same time he wouldn't hurry too much (he was worried that we were getting fed up with him and had started rushing things and making mistakes). We are all now feeling much more relaxed, he's taking a lot of care to do a good job, and it looks like it might finally all be finished tomorrow (she says hopefully).

glad to know Im not alone in the chaos. I decided, like you, to let them take their time and get it right rather than rush them and find corners cut. Hope you're all sorted by now!!

ok I have the wife taking mother and father in law away so I can fit the kitchen within a week. That might not help but its the way to get it done quick .
call me if you want.

at up to 4 weeks.
I was planning on having my worksurfaces replaced this summer and a breakfast bar (with matching worksurface) built in the corner.
Any guesses on how long that will take as was planning on going away whilst it is being done.

Not 4 weeks! Our neighbours are on holiday whilst the builders seem to be 'destroying' their house.
They are pulling out all the interior doors, the kitchen and even the floors and carpets!
We've had two weeks of banging and drilling ALL day long and they start at 8am and finish at 6pm
They were even at it this morning (sat)at 8am.
I think they are almost finished and are trying to finish off, but ridiculous amount of hammering

at builders/kitchen fitters that work from 8am to 6pm! How many tea breaks would that be

smittenkitten · 08/05/2010 14:47

well, i know it seems impossible now, but it will all get finished and it will be worth it.

ours took over 6 weeks of no kitchen, but we were having everything done - walls replastered, new floor joists, all plumbing moved and a new utility room at the same time. Good luck!

They are still at it! They even came on the Sunday as well!
There are now 5 vans outside their house and they are still drilling and banging.
What on earth needs so much drilling and hammering?
It is constant all day long

my mum did hers in 2 days. DH did ours in 4 weekends.

it really depends how motivated the installer is.

Finished last Friday around 8pm. Some minor snags, so he'll need to come back ... and so it goes on ... but we are slowly beginning to calm down and appreciate all the good things we never had before, like loads of worktop, dishwasher, huge fridge, etc.
