Bathroom furniture - wooden cupboards, drawers etc - how expensive!

We are trying to get our bathrooms overhauled - they really need it!

I have been looking into getting some of what I call bathroom furniture installed - basically where the sink and sometimes the toilet has furniture - cupboards, drawers, cabinets built round it. The furniture at all the bathroom showrooms we have been to seem incredibly expensive.

You can find this stuff on line a bit cheaper but you can't see before you buy so of course you are taking a chance on quality.

Has anyone got this type of look in their bathroom and can confirm where they got the bits from and quality? Thanks a lot

hi, we have a whole wall of cupboards in our bathroom with a gap in the middle for a mirror, tiled around the inside to make a recessed area, iyswim
we used kitchen wall units which were a much cheaper way of doing it. They provide loads of storage, look really smart. They are also easy to keep clean etc. Because they are wall to wall, you can't see the white carcass with the doors closed.

Snap! We used IKEA basic kitchen units in our bathroom, and a plain white worktop, cut a hole in it and 'sank' the basin into it, put a bit of sealant round it and it looks dead professional . And the cupboards start at about £35 (inc plain white doors)

in fact pinkycheesy is onto something there. have you looked at ikea? they do some nice bathroom stuff also.

stressed2007 · 04/05/2010 19:27

The bathroom stuff at Ikea is not very extensive. I am talking about a wall of cupboards not the small bathroom stuff they do.

Can anyone post a photo of their bathroom done with Ikea kitchen cupboards?

can't post photo as technophobe but ensuite and bathroom done with IKEA kitchen units too. Way cheaper, nicer and much more choice.

pinkycheesy · 04/05/2010 22:27

this is hopefully a pic of my ensuite!

pinkycheesy · 04/05/2010 22:29

just to say, I am in the process of redesigning our big family bathroom too, which will have a wall of cupboards like the ensuite but also with one tall cupboard (ie a larder-type thing) in the corner to store towels etc in. Again it will have a basic white kitchen worktop.

And here is the IKEA kitchens buying guide with all the prices for the cabinets
And this is the kitchen catalogue with all the different doors you can use on the basic 'Faktum' cupboards

pinkycheesy · 04/05/2010 22:39

and one last thing, we do have an IKEA kitchen too , in fact we have now had 3 IKEA kitchens in various houses, thats how I knew the stuff would be ideal in a bathroom

stressed2007 · 05/05/2010 16:20

ok - photos of kitchen too if you can. I am also having our kitchen done and the company that is probably going to install it said not to go with Ikea as the kitchens only last a few years. I have one friend that has an Ikea one and it looks brill I have to say. They have suggested to go with magnet instead (somewhat more money). What has been your experience with Ikea kitchens?

I thought Mdf wasn't recommended for bathrooms as the moisture can make it swell and crack.

thrifty · 06/05/2010 17:30

i think it helps if its well ventilated, our units dont get exposed to the moisture really, will try to do a pic for you stressed2007.
my parents have also had a few ikea kitchens, 4 in their flats that they rent out and one in their house.

thrifty · 06/05/2010 17:43

pics here

stressed2007 · 07/05/2010 08:54

Nice photos - thanks. So would you recommend the Ikea kitchens then?

my parents would recommend, ours is wickes i think the bathroom ones were b&q, tbh we didn't even consider ikea at the time as there wasn't a local one, however now we have an ikea 20mins away its a different story :-)

LadyThompson · 07/05/2010 14:09

Believe it or not, if you are on a budget there is some quite nice looking stuff in Argos

IHeartKingThistle · 07/05/2010 14:43

We got a set of bathroom furniture on ebay (wall hung cupboard with bowl sink, wall shelf unit and mirror) that was affordable. The quality is absolutely fine- it was a large ebay shop and it's just not worth it to those guys to get a poor rating.

We also got 3 ikea wall cupboards and put them in a run across one wall, I think they are bathroom cabinets (you can choose various doors - we went for white gloss, didn't bother with handles and they look fab).

Bathroom companies charge disgraceful prices for this stuff!

stressed2007 · 07/05/2010 15:37

So are your wall cupboards half way up the wall in a run?

IHeartKingThistle · 09/05/2010 00:44

Yep, although dh and I both tall so we put ours quite high. We've got the cistern and all that boxed in and tiled behind the toilet and the end of the bath, so there's a 'shelf' on top if you see what I mean, and then the cupboards above that. Actually the boxing in option was brilliant and gave us loads of storage - my dad did it and built in recesses and cubby holes to put stuff in. Just cheap wooden battens, plywood and then properly tiled - we're very pleased with it (my dad was knackered though!).

Been reading through this thread with interest, you're all talking about bathroom vanity units. Ours cost about the same as on Ebay but with the knowledge we had a guarantee with it.
