Anyone under/near the Heathrow flight path?

On our third visit to St Margarets on Saturday we finally coincided with the 6 hours of Heathrow flights landing directly overhead.
We had more or less decided to move there and now I am all in a quandary!
Does anyone live nearby who can offer advice - is it all that bad?

We used to live in Putney and it never bothered us at all (DS1 loved the planes) but that's a bit further away than St Margarets.

I lived there for four years and got to barely noticing it. IMO all the other lovely things about living in that area far outweighed the odd bit of noise.

my sister is in st margarets, we are about 3 miles away, you can hear the planes but it isn't too bad, think you get used to it. St M is a really lovely villagey place to live with very easy walking distance to richmond. go for it.

I'm in St Margarets (just south of the St Margarets roundabout) and it's honestly not that bad - and definitely far better than where we used to be in Richmond. (And even there I found I got used to them and stopped noticing the noise after a while.) As things stand, I wouldn't let it put you off moving here although if they ever go ahead with the third runway I might feel a bit differently!

My DH lived just over the road from St Margarets in Teddington. Never really bothered him.

You get used to it and sort of "zone out" really.

HerHonesty · 03/05/2010 20:48

well you get used to it. and then you'll leave, and realise how much better you sleep...

but st m is nice. but its going to get worse.

Thediaryofanobody · 03/05/2010 20:56

I used to live about 15 mins from Heathrow right under the flight path, honestly you stop noticing the noise. The only time I'd notice it was when the Concord went over but you wont have to worry about that now. Plus loved being so close to the airport.

Is the third runway a definite? Must check if any parties will veto it - might be a vote changer (what a NIMBY!)

We are in Barnes. We have friends in St Margarets and I don't know how they put up with the flights. The early morning flights are the worst, because everything else is so quiet at that time of day. Does your dream house have a bedroom in what used to be the loft? The planes are louder there, so don't assume that's where you will want to sleep if you have a choice!

Having the alternate landing times is really important to me; and the volanic ash was sooo nice. I know lots of people say you get used to the noise, and you do, but you don't realise what you've got used to till it stops!

I'd wait till the election if I were you - both Tories and Lib Dems are against the third runway. I am sure this is a principled stand and nothing to do with the marginal seats they both have under the flight path!

How close would you be to Twickenham stadium? They have pop concerts there too, which can be noisy.

We are a couple of miles away from St Margs and are relocating out of the area(fingers crossed) soon. dh is from around here and he is used to the noise. People told me I would get used to it - but I haven't /don't want to and am looking forward to living somewhere that is nice and also peaceful. That said, St Margarets is a lovely area and planes are part and parcel of living in this part of West London.

I'm in Barnes, been here for years and years, and was used to it...now got small children and admit I loathe the planes on a sunny afternoon in the garden, or early in the morning when they wake me up!

That said, we don't have them every day - they change flight path occasionally, sometimes for days and days. Its lovely. And silicone earplugs in the mornings work well (and double up as dh-snore-blockers, too).

St Mgs is lovely, I think I'd probably risk it

I don't know, London is a big place and it would cost us a small fortune to buy in St M's - what if I never got used to it?
Maybe renting first would be an option, see if it is an issue. There seems to be a clutch of streets north of the main street that get it worst, of course they are the houses we can afford!

We lived on the north side of the roundabout in a rental going up towards the new developments in the old brunel uni site. We rented and I would never never buy a house there. The first morning we'd moved we were woken at 5am by an incoming jumbo jet which sounded like it was about to land on our bed. South side of the roundabout where we had our first flat together is another story and it's amazing what a massive difference that small distance can make...I was really not bothered about it - it's a fantastic area and we were really happy about it. I live out of town now but still fairly near the flight path some weeks so you get used to it.
