Looking to buy investment property, any recommendations for good rental areas?

Due to dh's job, we live in rented accommodation and would like to buy something as an investment for the future.

We currently live in the East but could buy anywhere.

Looking for a 2/3 bedroom house preferably period/cottage in a town.

All recommendations welcome.

Need more information in order to answer your post e.g.
What is your budget?
Are you ok with students renting the house? If so, then a university town is always a good bet.
Who will look after it and deal with the practical problems that inevitably arise? If its too far away from where you live this could be a problem (or the rental agents will charge you an arm and a leg)
etc
etc
etc

Thanks Anna, our budget is flexible but under £160k would be nice!

Haven't quite made my mind up on the students yet - it does frighten me a bit though.

We wouldn't be looking to manage it ourselves, would have to use a letting agent.

How long are you planning on letting it out for?

weepootle · 02/05/2010 22:36

Long term - 9 years-ish.

If you want to buy one in Nottingham/Derby I'd rent it.

weepootle · 02/05/2010 22:40

Oooooh, don't know much about Nott/Derby but will take a look.

Something like this?

Nottingham's a university town, good transport links but a higher crime rate then the average in some areas.

I live in Derby, it's not bad I've rented the same house for 7 years, I can't buy as I have MS so can't get a mortgage. My house is too small (we have alot of books).

weepootle · 02/05/2010 22:46

this is nice

Yes, not in alvaston though, it's a crap area. It needs to be towards Nottingham, ds's secondary school is there. Long eaton maybe.

weepootle · 02/05/2010 22:48

Really Belle? I had no idea something like that would stop you getting a mortgage, how awful .

OP posts:
weepootle · 02/05/2010 22:51

That's the trouble with looking at pictures of houses with no idea of the area!

i like the concept of finding someone on mnet and then buying a house to rent to them

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 02/05/2010 22:55

We're in a 2 bed semi (ex-housing association) and it's titchy! There's no space at all, the dining table's in the living room because the kitchen's too small so it's cluttered. I just want some space!!

It's OK, there could be worse things to have. I'm an insurance risk apparantly (life insurance)

Long eaton's really nice, so's West Bridgeford in Nottingham.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 02/05/2010 22:56

Mumsnet is an odd place Anna!

weepootle · 02/05/2010 23:00

I know- wasn't quite expecting that!

OP posts:
BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 02/05/2010 23:02

Ah well. It was slightly cheeky of me, I'm sorry.

weepootle · 02/05/2010 23:04

Don't ask don't get. I think it's a great idea!

OP posts:
weepootle · 02/05/2010 23:05

what about this one?

OP posts:
AnnaSergeyevna · 02/05/2010 23:06

Yes, but if you're up for signing a 9 year lease (with a clause that says rent will rise in line with inflation) then weepootle should count her blessings and just go for it

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 02/05/2010 23:08

Wow! That's really lovely!!

Yup, that's the one! How easy was that!!!

AnnaSergeyevna · 02/05/2010 23:11

Do I get an arrangers fee?

weepootle · 02/05/2010 23:12

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-23184529.html?premiumA=true this is bigger then my house!

Arrangers fee? I'll send you a bottle of champagne if I win the mumsnet election comp how does that sound?

weepootle · 02/05/2010 23:20

That looks really teeny from outside but actually not too bad a size inside.

I really like that last one I linked, is it in a decent area?
