What do you use to 'cut in' around the edges when you paint walls?

Coz my method isn't working! I use a 1/2" artists brush which is accurate but the paint goes on a bit streaky and, when you roller as close as you can when you paint the body of the wall, you always end up having to redo the edges!

I once used a paint pad with 2 little rollers along one edge that you rolled along the adjacent wall but, though it was neat, I couldn't get in quite close enough to the corner or skirting.

So what do you recommend?

I use a good quality, natural bristled brush and a steady hand.

Here's a video showing the technique.

placemarking...

i always wonder why someone doesn't invent a super thin metal board (like a plasterer's board but much thinner and longer) to use as a ruler against the edges

Just a normal, smallish decorating brush kind of laid flat and splayed out a bit, and work it carefully along the edge.

OK, job done. Went out and bought a reasonable quality 1 1/4" brush and we seem to have success!

Thanks to all.

A really good brush

I had an angled, flat brush that was about 1/2" that I paid about £25 for. It was a prop decorator brush for cutting in, sadly lost it when we moved and have never een one like it since. So now I have to use a 1/2 normal paint brush which I paint some of the wall with first to work the paint into he bristles and soften it a bit, it tends not to be to streaky this way, but I always put 2 coats on anyway.

Streaky paint means you are applying too much paint on the first coat. I second everyone else, I use a 1/2 inch brush.

I also cut in with white paint first at the top of the walls and then cut in with the colour I am ultimately using. This means I don't have to try to follow the line of the paint colour I am changing.
