Are feature walls irredeemably naff?

They always make me think of those decorating shows like 60 minute makeover, but I need to inject some character in to my bedroom and my mum suggested a feature wall. She's an interior designer so now I'm confused as to whether they're naff or not?

Naff.
Sorry.

not necessarily naff, but definitely very much "of the moment" - in 5 years time people will look at a feature wall and think "Oh they decorated in the late 2000s then"... What I am trying to say is they will date very quickly IMO.

Resist.

Ok, so what can I do to introduce some character and colour in to my bedroom... a short description;

Walls are white
the bed is a bit like this only gunmetal grey and slightly more modern looking
Curtains are a heather/sand stripe of differing sizes
Carpet is cream
2 wardrobes in the alcoves are antique pine as is chest of drawers

dh has only recently painted the walls and I can't face having them done again as we've only just moved in. I want something pretty instant ie can be done in an afternoon.

Buy some interesting pictures/paintings/3D art work?

You could get strongly-coloured bed linen?

Quick and temporary...

Hi HeadFairy How are things? Hope all is your well with your world.

Re your bedroom - have you tried looking for a quirky piece of furniture? A bedroom chair or interesting lighting might add some interest. Even a fabulous rug.

Personally I'd be inclined to resist the feature wall - I think they will date and you'll hate it after a year or two.

Hiya wasabi, good thanks... dd is growing fast! How are you? I think I will resist the lure of the feature wall. I'm not sure we've got room to put another bit of furniture in there... even when we get rid of dd, I mean her cot

I do tend to go for white bedlinen, I suppose I could find some nicer more colourful ones. I have a beautiful gold velvet bedspread which would cover any new bedlinen and it would be a shame to ditch the bedspread.

We do have a really silly problem with the walls... they are rock solid, hanging pictures is a nightmare, we have to drill a hole and use a rawl plug. So although I do have a couple of lovely pictures I don't want to do that too many times.

does everyone think of this?

I have painted our bedroom dark green ,we have a cream carpet and very dark plum/black velvet cutains and a cream/plum bed cover.

I have stained the furniture black and we have a huge mirror propped on a very large chest of drawers (also black).

The whole thing doesn't look remotely gothic or dark, just (IMHO) very grown up.

What about painting walls a deep heather shade?

nappyzoneloveslindor · 21/04/2010 18:00

ifits only a feature wall with paint and not some heavy wallpaper then its not so bad is it as when it tires you just larry over it with soem paint.
