We are at the failed planning stage. I'm very, very worried that DH will not take my needs, wants and advice on board. Need some support during this as it's a big deal and DH and I think very differently about how we moved forward. For example we have asked for planning permission on a two story extenstion without finding out if we can afford it! I have called buiLders to give us estimates this week but not sure when DH would have thought this was a good idea!
Can I give ypu an idea how he sets about doing DIY. We have to insulate the front room internally. I check 'WHICH' website that recoomends that this is done professionally. So DH throws that idea away and he is going to do it. SO he plans to do it during Schools hols (he is a teacher) So he rips the plaster off one wall. but can't do the second wall until the raditor is removed and a new one is placed on another wall! I also wants some wall fitted lights to free up wall space. So we went out Saturday to look for a raditor and he bought it with out really thinking about the design or prices!!!! Raditors will not be delivered for two weeks from other shops!!!We now have to wait until the next holiday before he can do any of this! I think I need to project manage but don't know anything about building so how can I do this!!!! Can't leave it to DH help!!!

Hey Nutty come join us here

I feel your pain! What do you mean by 'failed planning?'- is it failed planning in your heads or from the actual planning dept? Sounds like you need to get professionals in anyway...

If you have applied for planning do you have an architect or someone who can help advise at this stage? I know zero about building stuff too and my DH isn't bothered about getting involved so I can understand how you are feeling. I bought a book on house extensions which has been great to help me understand things, maybe that would help you?

There are loads of us on the other thread so hopefully you will get support there...

Thank you ilike but you are all so far down the line. I have lurked.
We have an arcitect he is fighting our corner with the town planners. The planner told us to withdraw as there was not way our plans will be accepted. 4th try and he is still not having it! Which book did you get I'll buy it on line now! I need to sort this out before I need Relate

it is this one I'd really recommend it.

Everyone is at different stages on the other thread so you are very welcome to jump in for support!

Do you know why your plans keep getting knocked back?

Nuttybear · 16/04/2010 12:34

yes, we are in an area of special character but apparently they are applying conservation rules on us! Have sosme advice on another thread I've started and will research their replies next week when Little one is back at school.

We are wanting to extend but we are still in the trying to decide what we want stage and trying to find an architect. We have had a complete renovation of the existing house and that was nightmare enough so I am dreading it. I am wondeting whether it would be easier to move to be honest but we have a great location which I would be loathe to give up.

We are in a 3 bed-semi and want a two story side and small back extension and maybe into the loft to make a 4 bed with another room downstairs and loo and bigger kitchen. Other houses in the road have similar sho hoping planning will be approved.

Ingrid Our Architect came from our next door neighbours we liked the work they had done. Ask some of the neighbours.
Wish we got him involved in our house years ago. (long story) We live in an expensive area but DH bought 22 years ago. Not keen on moving from the area and our modest extension will be a lot cheaper than moving we suspect I think the builder was hinting at 50,000 to 70,000.

I have emailed an architect who wrote a piece in a local magazine about choosing to extend or buy. I will certainly ask one of our neighbours about their builders as his extension looks really good - unlike some of the neighbours. I have no idea how much ours is going to cost apart from loads! We are funding it with my inheritance from my parents who have died but it involves selling a property which is whole other layer of stress. I am determined the money will go on something I am going to love even if it causes me massive stress first!

Nuttybear · 17/04/2010 11:04

yes it it stressful but you have to take every a step at a time and keep a file I think. Good luck with finding an architect via neighbours. Many years ago (before DH & I were an item) DH put his inheritance into a business (pub) it flopped he has nothing to show for it! So having a lovely home is something you can enjoy everyday and pass on the profits to your kids. Keep me posted as to how it's going
