How much do you think this bathroom overhaul would cost??

Just wondering if anyone has any idea ROUGHLY this might cost. I have a small bathroom, just big enough for bath, toilet and sink. I want to do the following:

  • re tile the walls (half are tiled now, I want the old ones taking off and new ones putting on all the walls)
  • replace the bathroom suite with new basic white cheap ones
  • tile the floor or put lino down, its floorboards at the moment
  • all rubbish and old suite taken away.

Do you think I would be able to find one person to do all the jobs, and has anyone had simmilar done? I have two wedding cakes coming up in April to do (I bake cakes for a living)which I think will probably bring in about £700 or there abouts, do you think at a push I could do it on this budget? Or is that totally unrealistic?

Any advice appreciated!!

I think you could shop around and purchase all your materials for that but labour costs, assuming it could take 3/4 days could be the same again.

beatiebow · 15/04/2010 10:06

We need to do similar, I think £700 is unrealistic I'm afraid.
The big cost is in the labour-especially the tiling.
We had a quote for a few thousand (can't remember exact number) so put it on hold to work out a cheaper way.

thehillsarealive · 15/04/2010 10:06

pop into Wickes or B&Q and get someone to quote you. Go on your local 'trader' website and get quotes for tiling and fitting etc. It is much cheaper to get your own fitter/decorator than going with the shops team of people.

I think the rule of thumb is whatever the suite costs the fitting is approx half - but then that doesnt take into account any bargains you might get.

CMOTdibbler · 15/04/2010 10:10

I don't think that you will do it for that much, sorry. At the minimum, the suite is going to cost nearly 300 quid (and that would be v cheap), and tiling the bathroom will take a couple of days at least, then another two to fit the suite, plumb, finish off generally.

We are currently having our bathroom refurbished, and it's taking two people a week to do (although am having a new ceiling and the plumbing moved around).

I think you'd be lucky to get a bathroom refurb for under 2k tbh.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/04/2010 10:13

oh I thought I might be being a bit unrealistic!!
arrrgghh I hate our bathroom, its hideous and mouldy and ancient. It feels like it has the grime of 100 previous families in the cracks...

I wonder if I could do some of the work myself to cut down the cost....how hard is it to take tiles off, I wonder? It would have to be me doing it as DH physically cant, but its finding the time what with kids and work and all the other stuff you have to do isnt it? I was thinking to get the bathroom suite in the January sales and the tiles to just get the cheapest white ones, with maybe a strip of coloured ones round the middle, I dont want anything fancy, just something CLEAN!

you can use tesco vouchers at topps tiles now

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/04/2010 10:18

oh really, thats good to know, furball! Also my sister knows a fireman that does tiling for £80 a day....which I thought sounded reasonable. I suppose I should get some local traders in for qoutes and see, then I will have an idea of how much saving I need to do...

Taking the tiles off took our guys about 30 minutes - so that wouldn't save anything. Literally, they came in the house at 8am on Monday, and by 10am, there was nothing at all in the bathroom - no tiles, nothing.
The vast majority of the work has been in the tiling, and especially cutting tiles to fit neatly around everything. By the sounds of it, they are currently grouting

ellasmum1 · 15/04/2010 10:22

I'm in the same boat- horrible beige suite with 70's tiles! we are not going on hols next year so we can save 2.5 k to get it done.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/04/2010 10:22

ah ok. I know noting about this kind of thing, we have always just put up with whats there or tried (badly) to do it ourselves. You cant even do it in bits as you get the money as they have to tile around the new stuff. Perhaps if I kept the other two walls painted and just tiled round the bath sink and toilet, that might be a bit cheaper I am so forcing the DS's to take plumbing and diy courses when they get older!!

I removed all the tiles in our bathroom before the builders started work - it took me a few hours and they didn't run all the way round the room.

We did it as part of a complete house renovation so I'm not sure how much it saved us, but we needed to save money where we could!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/04/2010 10:27

my suite is sort of beige/brown/pus coloured! then someone in the 80's did the wallpapering, with stripes on the bottom, then a hideous scroll patterened border then a different pattern on the top. All the towel rails/shelves/hooks are hanging off the walls and the tiles are also beige and cracked. Rubbish isnt it.

I mean getting it in perspective, it all works, it isnt THAT bad but it just makes me feel a bit fed up everytime I go in there! Praps I should get out more...

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/04/2010 10:28

Norky, how easy was it to do, and did you do anything to prepare the wall after that?

Ihatebeingfrugal · 15/04/2010 12:54

We did this last year.

We got a really cheap white suite from B & Q which cost just under £200. I think my husband found it in the sale/discontinued area inside B & Q.Also where we live they have a pensioners 10% discount on Wednesdays, so my Dad went with my husband -paid with our cash- and my husband put the new suite in the back of our car.(seats folded down obviously!)

I think we paid about £700 for a plumber to fit it -but this included chiselling into the plaster of the walls to make a full size bath fit in (it was previously a smaller bath). We also removed the old tiles before the plumber started. My husband had never done this before but it was easy.I think he used a chisel type tool and put it under the edge of the tile and apparently they all came off very easily!

This saved us money as tilers included this as part of the quote they gave us .We paid for a skip and put everything in that (also to save money!)

I think in total ours was about £1500 - tiled, new suite , lino flooring, heated towel rail etc but realistically I would say 1-2000. Worth every penny as a pleasure to go into the bathroom now !

NorkyButNice · 15/04/2010 13:57

It was pretty easy, just stick a chisel under the edge and whack it (very hard) with a mallet.

Unfortunately most of our plaster came off with it as the room hadn't been redecorated for 30 years, so we had to have the room replastered.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/04/2010 14:50

Ok, thanks everyone for all the advice. Good idea on the pensioners discount!! Best get some more weddings booked up for next year hadn't I? At least I now wont feint in shock when the qoutes come in now!

You could have tongue and groove walls rather than tiling, made from marine ply to protect from damp.
This woudl be cheaper than tiling in terms of materials and labour.

Pannacotta · 15/04/2010 21:10

Also, you can put t&g over/in front of tiles so you could leave your exisitng tiles in place...

geraldinetheluckygoat · 15/04/2010 23:03

Oh thanks for the link, pannacotta, that does look nice, good idea!
