Where would you live in/around Nottingham?

DH has an interview in Nottingham, it would mean moving to within a commutable distance for us.

Which areas should we be looking at and where should we avoid?

Any advice re; schools esp welcome!

Wow, that was quick, I am going to make a route map for Monday!

Thanks

I'd avoid Derby itself, as the A52 is a nightmare first thing in the morning!

PippiPip · 03/04/2010 13:01

Lowdham is a lovely village - it did flood, but there have been major renovation works which have made sure it won't happen again.

Lowdham has a Football club and is close to Southwell Minster School which is supposed to be a very good school. The local primary is also well regarded. There are regular buses into Nottingham and buses to the High School, Southwell Minster School and Toot Hill (state, Bingham) go from the village.

I would really recommend it!

Clary · 03/04/2010 15:21

Derby's not minging!

(mock offended)

Some bits are nicer than others I will agree.

TBH if I were planning a daily commute to Nottingham uni I might look at Woollaton or Stapleford or Bramcote before places like Papplewick which are a lot further out.

Like I said, places between Derby and Nottingham are nearer than some places in Notts itself. A52 is busy but the worst bit in the morning is not the main road as much as getting through the city (Nott/ham) so that's what you need to avoid IMO.

Clary · 03/04/2010 15:23

places like Lowdham and southwell also well the wrong side (in terms of commute; I am sure they are lovely!)

PippiPip · 03/04/2010 16:28

Actually, most people from Lowdham/Southwell commute to Nottingham - there's a train station in Lowdham with regular trains to the city and the drive isn't as bad as you might expect!

nannynobnobs · 03/04/2010 16:41

Not Radford. My friend lived there and said it was as bad as Luton.
LUTON.
He opened his door once after hearing a commotion and found a bloody butterfly knife sticking out of his wheelie bin lid.
He shut the door quietly again (and probably hid with his WWII army helmet on) and when he checked a few hours later it had gone.

If you moved to West Bridgford (where I live) there is a cycle path all the way to uni(we do it to go to the park/theatre there) and a few students live here- it's just round the ring road to the uni or 2 very short bus rides.
The 2 comps and catholic school in WB get much better results than everywhere else in Notts and all primary are excellent-never really understand why you'd go private if you live in WB.However, I think you pay a premium to live here, but not as much as school fees would add up to.We are teachers (not in WB) so feel free to ask about any schools as we know people who teach in most of the ones in Notts.
I know people who commute in from Derby and find it quite hard work.

oldnewmummy · 05/04/2010 05:55

LOL! I was a student at Nottingham Uni and lived in Lenton, about 10m from Radford. I remember some documentary about how dangerous Radford was and we all sat killing ourselves laughing "This is a street in inner city Nottingham" as it seemed fine to us. (Wouldn't buy there though).

Lived in Long Eaton from 1988 to 1992. Wasn't that nice, but that may have been our street.

I remember Bramcote and Wollaton being nice, and convenient. The A52 end of Beeston would probably be relatively student-free.

tadjennyp · 05/04/2010 06:28

I did my teaching practice in Chilwell Comp Jeanjeannie and I quite liked it! I think Attenborough is quite nice and there are parts of Wollaton that are lovely. I lived in Radford, Lenton and Beeston while at Uni and they were a bit rough - good fun while a student/just starting out, but I wouldn't want to have my family there. Good luck though!

nickelbabe · 05/04/2010 12:32

given all the options: if you're at the Uni, then buy in Wollaton.
around Wollaton Vale is best, and it's right near Wollaton Park which is lovely.

Just wanted to say thanks to all who replied, we loved West Bridgeford and found out that one of my friends used to live there so she has given us lots of info.

I also liked Ravenshead (Just felt friendly),
am just hoping he gets the job now!

Let us know Semi - I lived in Ravenshead for nearly 20 years - grew up there!
Live near Linby/Papplewick now, both lovely villages too. (Not in them unfortunately! )

tadjennyp · 07/04/2010 18:51

I named one of the tables at my wedding after the Horse and Groom in Linby! Lovely villages, definitely. Do you live in Hucknall, by chance, Jackstini? Hope dh gets the job Serin.

Pollyanna · 07/04/2010 19:13

my mum always wanted to live in Redmile and around there.

I grew up in West Bridgford - nice (if suburban) place to live. Very easy to get into town from there.

KnackeredOldHag · 07/04/2010 22:38

Bare in mind though that although there are some lovely villages around that side of Nottingham, you have to go round the ring road to get to the University. This is fine when it's not rush hour, but a bit of a nightmare from 4-6pm every day.

Also, the University are introducing a parking levy from next year on (so each member of staff will have to pay for a parking space). This means there will be a definite advantage to living somewhere that you can cycle or bus in from easily.

Jackstini · 08/04/2010 07:56

Yes I do Tad! Just on the edge, walking distance to Horse and Groom
Serin DH could go via M1 to work instead of ring road. Linby is only 4 miles from J27 and it is pretty quick to J25. (Once the roadworks have gone at the end of this year!!)
Let us know how he gets on.

nickelbabe · 09/04/2010 15:35

serin - if he gets the job, you'll have to learn how to spell West Bridgford

fingers crossed for him!

serinBrightside · 10/04/2010 22:33

Good job he is the teacher and not me Nickel!!

Thanks everyone for the advice,I will be back if he gets the job!
