How to childproof double glazed windows?!

Does anyone know how to make double glazed windows safe for a toddler?

My dd is now 2 years and just started climbing out of her baby bed, plus she stands on stools etc a lot. So scared the next thing is she'll try and open the windows, especially in the night if she goes for a night walk!!!

Have no idea how to make the windows safe. The window in her room has 2 handles close together, so i tied elastic around those. But there are some single windows in the living room, so it means I can't tie them together. What can I do? I'm a single mum so no man in the house to assign this task to!

Hope a solution comes my way!

Thanks :-)

Can you not lock them?
It turned out that our neighbours had the same windows as us so they gave us one of their old keys (none here when we moved in).
You can buy locks to put on them (requires drilling and screwing on), but only if they are wooden dg windows.

If you do lock them upstairs you must have a key stored closeby at all times because otherwise you won't be able to escape in case of fire.

Yes, I'd fit locks. They're pretty easy to install (I am also a single parent but drilling isn't hard)

thanks everyone. But can't see what kind of locks you all mean. I'm not familiar with how they go on. Problem is the windows are plastic framed and I rent, so I think not allowed to dril into the plastic. I know that sometimes the handles can come with locks fitted in them with a key, but that would mean changing the handles, which I think the landlord will not want to do because of the expense. I will go and check at the hardware store for other options!

If you rent and your landlord knows you have a child, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask them to fit window locks. They aren't that expensive.

I was thinking of ones like this which mean you need a key to open the window.

We are on the ground floor and I have put these on our windows which means they can be opened for a bit of air but it's really difficult for a child inside or anyone outside to open them wider.

Window restrictors can be bought from here. Give them a call on 0207 228 1185 for more info.

We had restrictors fitted on our windows - got in touch with the original company and they popped out and did it for about £20. It's just a little clip (maybe 3 inches long) that is invisible when the window is shut, but you can only open the window an inch. They are on a spring so an adult can open the window further from inside or out (i.e. for rescue/means of escape)

Suggest you ring up a double glazing company and explain the problem.

just install locks!!! they're really cheap to buy

and might just deter the little one for another couple of months :P
