Bigger kitchen or bigger playroom? Cannot decide

So we are planning an l-shaped double storey extension this year.

The way the house sits on it's plot and the restrictions etc means that we will have a small office room at the front side and then behind we can either have a utility room off the kitchen to the side and a huge playroom at the back running the length of the house plus new extension or we take down the external wall extend the kitchen out then use part of the playroom as the utility toom then the rest of it as the playroom.

Second option means more disruption and a whole new kitchen but would lead us to have a huge open plan kitchen/dining room (about 7m wide), if we keep the existing kitchen we would still have a 4.5m kitchen/dining room.

I think long term the extra money and hassle would be worth it as I think a larger kitchen is more useful than a large playroom at the back of the house. The playroom will still be about 3.5m x 4m so not exactly small.

We are about to become a family of 6 as well so I think a good space to eat in the evenings with a large dining table would be a better idea.

kitchen- no question

Kitchen - nice and cautious decision for if you ever have to re-sell.

with a kitchen that large you will be in it all the time - sounds wonderful

That's what I thought

We are trying to keep the disruption to a minimum as we will have to live here with 4 young children throughout. If we don't knock down the wall it would mean no external walls coming down which would have been great but I am thinking short term pain for long term gain.

We currently have a living room/dining room set up and are going to close off the dining room and open up the kitchen/dining room, our kitchen is tiny just now, you open a cupboard and everything falls on top of you so the thought of a large kitchen is lovely.

I know it's a bigger upheaval, SK, but kitchen all the way. A playroom's great, but where do your kids end up playing anyway?? If they're anything like mine, it's wherever you are

Kitchen here too!

We had an extension to the ground floor of our house two years ago so now have a huge kitchen/diner. Its fab and we spend all our time in it.

The children have a small playroom but as they are getting older they are in it less and less so I hope to reclaim the room back one day soon

I am having french doors from the kitchen to the playroom so will probably end up living at the back of the house keeping the living room free of toys (ha ha ha ha ha)

Will show DP this thread when he gets home. Now I just have to design the kitchen

Am just hoping we get planning for it.

Most people like big kitchen-diners and it's a major selling point. We live in ours. Fabulous.

A bigger kitchen will add more value to your property. You should really get an Architect on board to produce a detailed set of drawings. This will then allow you to obtain a few different builders quotes which will increase the cost effectiveness of the project.
cheak these guys out - www.atwlimited.com

wambat - architect is on board, he has come up with a rough set of drawings we just have to finalise what we want.

I think we will be extending the kitchen have told DP it is the MN consensus
