has only one bathroom and it is downstairs!

Basically 2 bedrooms (plus box room) on first floor and living/dining, kitchen and bathroom on ground floor.

I bought one in August so yes Ours is 2 bed plus loft conversion with living, dining, kitchen and bathroom downstairs.

claricebeansmum · 24/03/2010 15:23

Yes - not the end of the world.
And the dirty laundry can go straight from bathroom to washing machine

nickytwotimes · 24/03/2010 15:25

Yes.
No house is perfect unless money in no object.
If it is good apart from that then don't let it put you off.

expatinscotland · 24/03/2010 15:26

No, not if I could afford one with two.

Unless there was room for me to put another.

I hate this one bathroom business.

donteatthat · 24/03/2010 15:30

look on the bright side, at least you'll have a downstairs loo...! lots of houses like that where i live and people don't seem to be put off (although I admit it's something I also haven't decided on, i might make the compromise if everything else was perfect)

Laquitar · 24/03/2010 15:41

On the strength of having lived in several terraced houses with downstairs bathrooms i wouldnt (and didnt).

Mainly for damp and winter coldness levels rather than a convinience issue.

In a trad victorain type terrace (assuming that what you are buying) then the downstairs bathroom is often a single-skin brick ex-outbuilding type arrangement and they get v. cold and then have damp problems through high levels of condensation form bathroom use.

Can you turn the upstairs box room into a bathroom and then have a bigger kitchen plus loo downstairs or even convert it into a guest room/office type room?

Rocinante · 24/03/2010 15:57

Yes, Well we did though we do have a sink upstairs in our bedroom which is useful.

Agree that if you like the house apart from the bathroom being downstairs, don't let it stop you, it's really not that much of a hassle.

yomellamoHelly · 24/03/2010 16:02

Yes. We did - 8 years ago. Thought we'd put in an en-suite but never got round to it as hasn't been an issue. Have double glazing in there and extractor fan.

Indith · 24/03/2010 16:05

What the hairybaby says is quite important though. Ours is in an extension and does get very cold. However, it is cavity wall so we are going to get it insulated which will make a big difference and also replace the tiny little radiator with one big enough for the room! It is true that if it is single skin then it will be baltic and wet.

I don't understand why it is a problem to have the bathroom downstairs though. If you think about it you use the loo much more during the day when you are downstairs so there is less traipsing up and down with a downstairs one.

ShinyAndNew · 24/03/2010 16:09

I'm living in one. It's no problem really. MOre hassle on a night if you need the loo, but easier during the day. And yes, very handy for washing.

MrsJohnDeere · 24/03/2010 16:12

No (and rejected a few near perfect houses in the past because of this).

Laquitar · 24/03/2010 16:12

Thehairy, yes it is victorian house.
It is not actually for me - sorry for not explaining before. I am trying to help my brother who doesnt live here, he wants to buy it, decorate it, and then either rent it out for while and then sell it.

I told him that people in Britain prefer 2 bathrooms and upstairs and it might be difficult to rent it out or sell it. Although in this poll most posters wouldn't mind so maybe i was wrong.

But your point about the dump is good i think.

To stop damp in outr we have a large vent thingy and an extractor/heater. Plus whole room is tiled bar ceiling (which is painted with v tough paint) so that nothing is getting damaged by the steam.

Fimbow · 24/03/2010 16:15

My parents house is like this, I grew up with it and didn't find it strange until I had a home of my own. My auntie's is like this too and she has carpet going up the side of the bath panel!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 24/03/2010 16:16

No. I need the loo at least once every night, often twice and I am too lazy to traipse downstairs

cece · 24/03/2010 16:19

Yes, our first house was like that. Handy for the kids during the day.

thehairybabysmum · 24/03/2010 21:51

But for a buy to let it is fine though.

The day time convenience is outweighed by the hideous-ness of lying toasty in bed but bursting for the loo knowing the bathroom is freeeeeeeeeeeeeezing!!
