Often when we view houses there is no utility room and the washing machine and drying facilities are in a shed or out house. We viewed a house yesterday and the vendor explained, as they always do, that this was a simply splendid arrangement because it meant we wouldn't have to listen to the noise of the washing machine.

Now, I'm sure that given the choice, most people would prefer to have a washing machine in at least the kitchen with the door closed than have to traipse outside to wash their clothes, particularly during the winter we've just had.

Do these people really think we agree with them?

No we have ours in the garage, ok I don't need to go outside but I would never again have a washing machine in the kitchen, it takes up too much space and looks ugly IMO
Next door have to go to an outhouse and it doesn't seem to bother her if anything she uses the line more than me, I guess because she has to walk past it to come inside anyway.

Depends on space as well. We have our washing machine in the kitchen but then we're a first floor flat so options are kind of limited.

AMumInScotland · 23/03/2010 12:50

I can't imagine that any arrangement where you have to walk through the rain/wind/snow/sleet to get your clean dry washing back from the machine could ever be ideal! Maybe these people don't have big families and just don't have to do the washing when it's inconvenient? Like all winter?

bizarre!
saying that the house i want to buy doesn't have the dishwasher in the kitchen but in the utility
and the owner pointed out that she'd taken out the basin in the downstairs loo to make room for the dcs junk
was even more by that!

We moved ours to the garage-it is reached by a carport so undercover all the way.It is great,no noisy machine taking up kitchen space, and no dirty washing in the kitchen.

When we were little, ours was in the bathroom, far more logical than the kitchen.

venusonarockbun · 23/03/2010 15:26

Ours in garage too. I dont have to go outside to get to it but couldnt imagine ever having to have it in the kitchen again. I would prefer it in the bathroom though.

Bizarre, but not as weird as the house we viewed once which had the fridge in the garage! And it wasn't an integral garage either, but one where you had to unlock the kitchen door (2 locks and a couple of bolts) and walk across a small section of patio, before unlocking the garage door (ditto with the locks). And then back again. Imagine that first thing in the morning making a quick cuppa!

The vendors swore blind it wasn't an issue. Except I guess that they were moving.

I used to have a utility room. I LOVED it. I currently have to go outside to an outbuilding and I HATE it. I can't wait to get our extension built and a utility room back.

bumpybecky · 23/03/2010 16:48

in the last house we rented the washer was outside in an outbuilding next to the kitchen

some delightful person pinched our clean washing (duvet cover and sheet) and put their manky work clothes on to wash

we got a lock after that!

Ours is down a 10m muddy footpath in what we call the dungeon (no windows built into hillside). It's great, I get outside briefly even in winter for a bit of fresh air/escape from small children. I can dump all the washing out there which after the recent sickness bug meant a huge mound of stinky duvet, sheets, etc out of range of my nose whilst the machine gradually processed it. We've got a machine that gives you a time count down till finish which is useful. I did 4 loads the other day imagine that churning in your kitchen all day.

Also keep the big freezer & random junk out there and so pick up stuff when collecting/delivering the ever on going washing..

Our old rental had the washer and dishwasher in the utility in the converted garage; not too bad, until you realised the dishwasher was on top of the washer, so you couldn't use the washing machine when there was anything in the dishwasher, otherwise the vibrations from the washer broke everything in the dishwasher! We learnt that the hard way...

taffetacat · 23/03/2010 21:32

It seems the current thing to have the washing machine upstairs so you don't have to traipse the clothes down.

I saw a US home improvement book a while back that had a dumb waiter type laundry chute from upstairs bathroom to downstairs laundry room.

We've just had a whole house refurb but I remembered about it afterwards.
