We are planning to build a solid porch at the front of our house as we need coat/shoe storage etc.

The architect has give us two options - flat or slightly pitched roof.

I know what I think, but I'd be interested in a few other people's opinions...

(Be gentle though please... I'm already beginning to get stressed over it!)

Can't find your profile when I click on your posting name

I reckon a pitched roof is always better than a flat one though

sorry... am struggling to work out how to make it public.. hang on a minute...

I would go with the pitch as well - looks like it belongs more than the flat roof one which looks like it was tagged on afterwards (which it will be !).

Also less maintenance problems with pitch roof compared the flat I think.

Pitched roof, the flat one looks a bit 1970's.

Lizzylou · 19/03/2010 15:31

Pitched, definitely

LIZS · 19/03/2010 15:31

pitched definitely - it l'll cost more though

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 19/03/2010 15:39

The pitched looks better IMO...

..and in one of our previous houses, someone had added a flat-roofed porch which leaked incessantly, fixed it at least 3 times the 5 years we were there.

DrivenToDistraction · 19/03/2010 15:43

Yup, definitely pitched. Could you utilize the (tiny) roof space for storage? Every square inch counts .

Bumblelion · 19/03/2010 15:44

Pitched roof definitely.

PlumBumMum · 19/03/2010 15:50

another one for pitched

or the opposite, could you have exposed beams, my friend has beautiful oak ceiling/beams in something similar

daisydotandgertie · 19/03/2010 15:58

Pitched. The flat roof looks like a cheap add on.

Hope that helps.

seb1 · 19/03/2010 16:00

Pitched

DrivenToDistraction · 19/03/2010 16:00

Oh yes Plum, that does look great doesn't it!

NomDePlume · 19/03/2010 16:01

pitched, deffo. It'll cost more but it'll look more expensive and less like a 'bolt on' as well as the less leaky aspects

WhichPorch · 19/03/2010 16:59

Thank you, thank you...

Yes I agree - I prefer the pitched absolutely and agree with the comments about add-ons/ flat leaking etc.

When we first discussed it DH preferred the flat and just couldn't 'see' why it was wrong, wrong, wrong - that's why I got the architect to draw them both up, although it cost a bit more.

We showed our 7-year-old DS and asked which looked better and he said, "it's obvious, Mummy, that one (pitched) is miles better.."
"Why?" we asked

"Because it fits in with the rest of the house - it's like a mini-roof, oh, and the other one looks like a public toilet.."

Phew! Thankfully DH has conceded....although is still waffling on that 'it didn't look so bad on the B&W line drawings, blah, blah'. Pah - why can't he just say 'OK - I was wrong...' ?
