Anyone have their washing machine/drier outside the house?

Well, it looks as though we have found a house! A house with the world's smallest kitchen - the plan being to extend in a few years' time. There is currently a washing machine in the kitchen - but I'd rather replace it with a dishwasher and relocate the machine to the outhouse. Has anyone else done this? I realise it's not ideal - think traipsing out in the rain, the snow ... but it wouldn't be forever - and I think that with a small kitchen I'd much rather have a dishwasher to try and keep everything under control!

I live in a Victorian end of terrace, my kitchen is the typical small galley kitchen.

I have my washing machine in the kitchen, but have a tumble dryer in my shed at the bottom of the garden. We just ran an outdoor extension cable through a 15ft hose down the side of the fence- we have it up off the ground and then goes through the shed wall(sealed), with a 2 gang plug socket on the end.

I have no problems with it, as long as it's not raining too hard then I run the drying down, although I sometimes use a brolly.

When we had the heavy snow, I put the washing to dry on airers upstairs, as the heating was on anyway.

We have our tumble drier in the shed - only a few steps from the house, and it's no hassle at all.

In fact I prefer it as I don't have to listen to it churning away

Our tumble drier is in the shed, and it's great. Make sure you get one with an auto-shut off thought so it's not running on for hours. I would have the washing machine out there too if I could - it's so noisy in the kitchen.

our tumble drier is in the garage, bloody good job too or dh would go mad knowing how much I use it

We have our washing machine and drier in a storage/utility bay just outside our door. No problem at all and means the noise from the machines don't bother us.

Ours are out in the outhouse. Was a PITA in the bad snow and stupid minus temperatures but tbh I just changed my routine a bit and go there on the way out of hte house or when I'm coming home and so I'm all wrapped up anyway. The only problem we've encountered is making sure the pipes don't freeze.

I don't like going outside to do the laundry though adn I'm getting a utility built as part of our extension.

In my old house used to have the tumble drier in the outhouse.

Ran out there half naked in the rain a few mornings to desperately dry something. But apart from that it was fine - tumble driers are noisy so is better to have it in the kitchen.

I now have a dedicated laundry room (just off the garage) whjich is bliss - all the laundry crap is shoved in there rather than having clothes horses etc all over the house.

We have our tumble drier in the shed, we had electricity out there anyway and there is no room for any more stuff in our kitchen.

BigBadISaidNo · 11/03/2010 16:08

We used to have this and managed for years until we built an extension. It was a PITA with forgotten bits and in the rain/snow etc, but as I said we managed.

Could bribe DH usually to go out in extremes though!

We moved our w/m into the garage to make room for a dishwasher and it is fine.It was slow to fill with water one morning when the temperature was way below freezing, but still worked fine.I prefer it out there-no smelly dirty clothes in the kitchen.
