New bathrooms - what floor to put down

We are having new bathrooms put in. Can anyone suggest what to put on floor. I had tiles put in old house and I did n't really like them - the floor was very cold and the grouting got very dirty. Can anyone suggest something? Thank you

We have rubber flooring in our new bathrooms - warm underfoot, hard-wearing and easy to maintain. We chose slate effect rubber tiles, though also liked the funky studded ones.

Dark tiles & underfloor heating if you can afford it.
Like cathbath's rubber idea too though.

can anyone link to this rubber floor - I have never heard of it. Thanks

I like real lino, trade name Marmoleum.
Though slate effect rubber sounds cool...

We put in Kardean in our bathroom & en-suite - can get loads of types that can lok like real tiles but are flat and warm. Lay them over waterproof plywood.

another good idea - where did you get this from?

Whatever you do, put underfloor heating underneath it - sooooo regret not doing that in our (black tiled - look very nice) bathrooms and kitchen. Very cheap as well if small area and you can use electric system.

Bamboo. Glorious to look at (warm, sunny) and wore very well. Also sustainable, thus eco-friendly.

I had it in both our bathrooms of last house and wish I had an excuse to swap the cold beige tiles in new house for it

wonder if I could overlay the funky rubber stuff on cold tiles, though??

paddypoopants · 08/03/2010 13:46

We did our bathroom and decided to put (expensive) vinyl down to save some money rather than the tiles I would've liked. Annoyingly everyone keeps going on about how nice the floor is. Even I have to grudgingly agree it feels great to stand on and to keep clean and would probably use it again if I ever do another bathroom. It was Nairn I think.

lala can you only use underfloor heating under ceramic tiles or stone?
Presume it doesnt work under lino/rubber etc?

SexyDomesticatedDad · 08/03/2010 15:26

Try googling Karndean or Amtico (same sort of stuff) - usually there will be local stockists. Kardnean I know and have used - you can do your own designs on their website.

I'm sure underfloor would work with these sort of vinyl tiles - usually they have to be laid onto a smooth surface - cement or plywood. Check with local stockist. These sort of tiles you stick on and quite easy to cut / fit so you can DIY or find a competent handyman to do them.

We were worried about coldness and hardness of tiles so got some stone tile looking vinyl which i was sceptical about but like previous poster everyone comments on how good it looks - bonus being also it was fit and done in about 30 mins!

taffetacat · 08/03/2010 20:45

we have this in the kids bathroom

and this in our ensuite

no underfloor - have towel rails

PandaEis · 08/03/2010 20:47

get the sparkly tiles like they have in the disney shop i LOVE them and i wish i could redo our bathroom so i can have them who cares if your feet are cold they will sparkle(reflection from tiles obv)

cathbath76 · 08/03/2010 22:00

We got our rubber tiles from therubberflooringcompany.co.uk/

We've got a posh lino in ours and it looks like mosaic tiles - instead of just being printed, the design is actually embossed so the tiles sit proud of the grout lines by a couple of mm. The tiles are also quite hard and shiny to the touch but the grout part is rougher and matt, so it's very realistic - it doesn't really feel like lino at all, but is still warm underfoot. I can't remember what brand it is but we got it at Allied carpets 3 years ago and it was about £50 a square meter, so a bit pricey by lino standards but a lot less hassle that tiles.

We're saving up to redo our bathroom and planned to have the same tiles on the wall and floor, but I know we'll probably go for more lino or a rubber floor when the time comes. Our floors have quite a lot of bounce in them so I think the grout would probably end up cracking unless we ripped all the boards up and replaced them with something stronger. And soft flooring is soooo much easier!

Lilymaid · 08/03/2010 23:05

Cork - natural product that is renewable and which provides a warm surface.

lalalonglegs · 09/03/2010 11:45

Pretty sure that UFH works under most flooring - not recommended for certain types of solid wood but should be fine with rubber.

MillyMollyMoo · 09/03/2010 11:53

Not tiles, bloody nightmare to keep clean and so cold.

CuppaTeaJanice · 09/03/2010 11:53

We used a safety vinyl because I wanted something sparkly!! The sort you get in restaurants, shops etc. It cost £11.95 + VAT per square metre.

We got it from kimpton flooring - Google it. They've got loads of colours and will send out samples. And if anybody happens to live in Wales they can go to their warehouse and buy offcuts really cheap.
