Am crazy about a house, but am worried it is heart over head!

We have found (what I believe to be!) an amazing house. Fabulous views, in a little village, but v close to the main town (10 mins cycle), but needs a ton of work doing. I'm not working over the summer, so have 4 months to work on it. It is £40k under budget, so we have the money to do the work, and the views are amazing.

However, if we go up to the top of our budget, there is an ex-council house with an extra bedroom that needs no real work. I feel so stupid, but I have totally fallen for this duffed up old terrace.

Am I being stupid?

No, not stupid at all. There's nothing quite as great as falling in love with a house and just knowing it's perfect, it has character, it has the right atmosphere, all the rest of it - and you're lucky that you've found somewhere you feel like that about. The work doesn't all have to be done at once, and you'll be able to put your own mark on it. Buy it.

Thank you so much! I feel really silly, as poor dp is so REASONABLE bless him! He has had me sulking all over the place because I thought he didn't like it, as he is quite happy to go by size and number of rooms, as opposed to the feel of the place. He is very laid back about surroundings, but I need to stamp!. I cried on a number of occasions yesterday when I thought he didn't want it, so I knew it was THE ONE.

We bought a large, delapidated 1930s semi on the side of a ring road - no one had done a thing to it since around 1965. But it just felt right - and 10 years later, and a lot of work and money later, it's still right. I'm usually quite a logical person but with house buying I think instinct has to be more important.

I put the offer in, and am now shaking like a leaf! The bathroom in in the kitchen (with the kitchen, bleurgh!), the stairs are a danger, but it may well be home! Thank you for making me feel less silly!!

You've done exactly what I would have done. There is nothing like falling in love with a house, it will be something that once you've done the work on you will love for a long time.

Good luck, hope they accept your offer.

This is exactly what we did - fell in love and now, 9 months after moving in we still fall in love with parts of our new home every day! we've run out of cash to make any more renovations for a bit but it doesn't bother us because we've got forever to finish it!
this was built 1902 and many of the original features are buried under 1970's interior and we keep finding them, its magical.
will be so glad to rip that bright blue bathroom out one day though lol ;0)

Hope you are successful. Its sounds great - good choice.

paddingtonbear1 · 06/03/2010 10:08

The house sounds fab, you are not silly at all. It's the sort of place I'd go for if I (or dh) had any idea about DIY!
Fingers crossed for you.

I bought a farmhouse that had had no modernisation since the fifties, including no central heating and a coal fired rayburn as the only thing on which to cook eight weeks before I gave birth

I have never regretted it for a moment. Hope you get your house.

has your offer been accepted?

it sounds a great house! I love house projects.
