Tiling quote

Hi

We have had quotes to remove/replace a tile border in the bathroom. The tiler has quoted it will take him TWO days to do this & will be £200 per day (so £400) PLUS all materials. The rooms is 12'5" x 5'7". Anyone else think this is ridiculous?

He has also quoted to tile the floor & again quoted £200 per day plus all materials.

That is £800 for 4 days work - I can't see how it can take that long? Or maybe I need a reality check.

I can't quite picture it - is he having to remove all wall tiles and re-tile or just a section?

Depends where you are in the country but £200 per day plus materials is probably ok, we paid £180 a day to our tiler recently.

If he has to remove all the wall tiles and retile then 2 days is probably about right if it is only a small section should only take a day.

The floor isn't that big and shouldn't take him more than a day IF it is straightforward (i.e. big tiles which are easy to cut and no awkward shapes to go around) but if it is fiddly then could easily take 2 days. Our bathroom floor took 1.5days iirc with some cut outs for pipes/around chimney breast and the room is a bit bigger than yours.

However you also need to remember that usually the tile adhesive needs to dry overnight before the tiles are grouted so that might be one reason why he has quoted longer than you were expecting.

I'd get another quote to compare.

We just had some tiles put on for £18 per metre squared - can you not remove the old ones yourself to cut down on time and cost - it is a liberating process knocking off old tiles i found. Our tiler did tile then grout the same day.

I thought most tilers charged by the square meter now, rather than an hour/day basis. I'm in Scotland and the going rate is £20 per meter, but my mum is near Chester and she paid £15 a meter recently.

You should work out the sq meters and then you'll have a better idea of whether his charges are reasonable.

We need someone to put up 2m2 of tiles in our kitchen (it's very little!) , would they really only charge per metre? Would they charge the same if you had 10 massive tiles as for 100 little ones?

(can you tell I've not yet got round to finding any quotes...?!)

I think it depends on the tiler jumpjockey - if it was a small job, they might bump the price up a bit to make it worth their while coming out, or they might decide to do it for £50 because it'll fill a couple of hours on an otherwise quiet day. The tilers we had quotes from didn't seem to bother about the size of the tiles, I think each size has it's own problems and benefits. You need less big tiles but they're likely to rock if not bedded in evenly, and are usually thicker so are harder to cut. Smaller tiles mean more to put on the wall, but they're more forgiving on uneven walls and easier to handle and cut.

Our tiler charges £150 a day.I would get a couple more quotes. If you can remove the old tiles yourself it will be a lot cheaper too.

Hi

The walls are tiled about just over half way up the wall & along the top tiles is a narrrow border tile - it is this tile we want removing & replacing. Another tiler said we will need 8 linear meters for the border tile &his quote was a bit cheaper than the 1st quote. Have had a 3rd guy come out today who thinkis it will take him 2 day, which is 1/2 what the 1st tiler said. Thanks
