Who has an outside toilet?

What do you do with it? Do you use it as a toilet? Or for storage? Or something else? Is it actually useful to have an outside loo?

Ours is currently a bit grim, so doesn't get any use - I'm planning to tart it up with a fresh coat of paint and encourage people to use it when we have parties in the garden, rather than traipsing through the house. I'd also be able to use it when I'm gardening.

On the other hand, DH thinks we should convert it into a woodshed, for when we need to move the wood out of the garage.

But then I've had the brilliant idea of adding an orangery to the house, where the toilet is, so maybe we'll end up wihtout one.

I really miss mine.It was great for using whilst in the garden-no muddy feet / taking wellies off.It was useful for parties too.We only have 1 loo now and could do with another one.

SuperBunny · 28/02/2010 20:21

It does sound useful. I am hopefully moving to a new house with an outside toilet that has been rather neglected but still works so I wasn't sure if I should clean it up or unplumb (deplumb?) it and use it as a hen house or something. Thank you for your help!

I've known them to be used as mini utility rooms for the dryer and extra freezer.

MarionCole · 28/02/2010 21:28

DH's uncle's only toilet is outside.

LauraIngallsWilder · 28/02/2010 21:32

Bear in mind that an outside loo is.........outside!
Therefore when its really cold a burst pipe is a likely possibility

I speak from recent experience

But yes it is a useful extra when gardening or for kids when they are playing outside

86Pinkle · 28/02/2010 22:09

We have an outside one, but it takes away space from the kitchen - it was really useful when we had our bathroom re-done however it going when we re-do the kitchen so we can have french doors and hopefully re-locate it under the stairs.

SuperBunny · 28/02/2010 22:13

The toilet IS dripping, Laura - I wonder if that is because of a burst pipe. I do need to get that sorted. The more I think about it, the more useful I think this will be. If only it had a sink in there too...

Our outside loo also boasts a tap which is very handy for the garden hose

Pipe leading to tap burst
Water EVERYWHERE
Flooded adjacent brick built shed
It now smells damp!

All my stuff in plastic boxes so now damage as such but not fun when it happened!

I didnt realise that an outside water facility also meant burst pipes

When I saw the title I thought this was a Keeping Up with the Joneses type of thread and was getting ready to feel a real down-at-heel for not having an outside lav

WingedVictory · 28/02/2010 23:05

We have one, and I think it could have been used for the garden originally, but it is a pain of a location. If this were our house (we rent), I would try to get permission to build a "conservatory" along the kitchen, enclosing the loo and creating a utility room (run), perhaps for drying clothes or some more storage. The conservatory would probably be cheaper than an extension. Hope that idea starts you thinking...?

bibbitybobbityhat · 28/02/2010 23:05

I love our outside loo.

I make dh go out there for his morning constitutional (come rain, shine, or 6 inches of snow) because he always seems to want to go just as I'm about to get in the shower in our only other bathroom.

Couldn't get rid of it .

SuperBunny · 28/02/2010 23:08

Oh no Laura. I don't want to be dealing with that.

lol display. As you can clearly see from this thread, your suspisions were right and obviously people with outside toilets ARE superior. Especially LauraIngalls because hers has a tap.

OP posts:
LauraIngallsWilder · 01/03/2010 00:22

I am superior

Its a rented house though so i cant really take the credit for the tap!

First ever time in my adult life I have lived in a house with an outside tap (have always wanted one) - I didnt imagine the possible burst pipe problem though (that was not good!)

ShinyAndNew · 01/03/2010 00:24

I used to have one in my last house. We used for storage.

BertieBotts · 01/03/2010 00:29

My grandad has one. When my Grandma was alive or when he has visitors he always goes outside for number 2s. It's also useful if someone else is in the bathroom and you need to go - I used to be scared of it when I was little though.

WingedVictory · 01/03/2010 09:10

I don't feel superior about ours!

GrendelsMum · 01/03/2010 09:54

We have a sink in ours too. So there.

WingedVictory · 01/03/2010 10:45

That is swish, GrendelsMum.

SuperBunny · 01/03/2010 18:32

Grendelsmum, you are just showing off now

i feel as though im really missing out on something here! Just had an extension - why did i not add in outside lav??? Any tips for avoiding burst pipeage on outside tap while were on? You can isolate ours from inside but thats never going to happen as behind washer.....

GrendelsMum · 01/03/2010 19:42

[smug]

southeastastra · 01/03/2010 19:44

my arse feels cold just thinking about an outside loo

morningpaper · 01/03/2010 19:46

hehe we have one! DH uses it for poos, for some reason

It is basically the Man Poo Loo

ShellingPeas · 01/03/2010 19:52

We have one - twas the original loo in our Victorian house. It is no longer used as a toilet but as an outside store room.

When I grew up in NZ we had an outside loo - it was torture if you needed a wee at night. There were all sorts of things lurking to get hold of you... spiders, cockroaches to fall on you from the ceiling, stray lions, not to mention the toilet monster!
