anyone else had to use a storage company to store many of your belongings, in order to sell your home? we have soooo much stuff that if anyone was to walk into our boxroom, they'd be put off buying I think! It really is untidy and messy, but we've no intention of getting rid of all the belongings we have. running out of space!!

DH is really the guilty one because he doesn't want to get rid of stuff.

we are hoping to get the house on the market over the next couple of weeks, but just wondering if anyone else was successful in selling their 'cluttered' home?

thanks!

I'd recommend packing stuff up and hiring a storage unit. Don't declutter absolutely everything, as this can make the house looks a bit stripped and staged, but equally don't leave things lying around unless they're useful and/or nice to look at. It's really hard for buyers to see past other people's clutter, and lots of clutter suggests no storage - which might be true, but you don't want them to know that!

It'll also make things easier when you move, as it'll already be packed up, and you might even manage to get DH to part with some stuff - somehow things have less sentimental value when you see them boxed up in a storage unit, instead of in your own home!

Big Yellow Storage have a lot of branches throughout the UK and are probably the best known place.

I'd get a self storage unit too - my friends have a very cluttered house, and when people were viewing it they all said that it seemed too small, even though it was a nice spacious house in reality.

We've just done this today (hired a unit and taken 3 car loads of stuff over). Feels so much better to have less stuff everywhere and hopefully will be easier to sell the house. Also we've been ruthlessly sorting out stuff for charity shops. I feel quite efficient for a sunday afternoon

thighsmadeofcheddar good luck with the sale of your house, sounds like you've done the best you can to make it sell quickly.

thanks for all the advice, probably going to phone around for self-storage places to dump our stuff that isn't really necessary for viewers to see. Definately right though, it would look as if we had no storage space for our belongings if we just left it all lying around the way it is just now

Most of the house is fine except boxroom and clutter in downstairs cupboard. I have suggested we get rid of some stuff but DH is having NONE of it He is a hoarder - family thing!
