Bathroom window issue, neighbours getting to see more of me than I would like!

We are just in the process of redocorating our new house before we move in, and it occured to me today that my bathroom window is completely clear (like a normal window) and not textured or frosted as it should be.

I didn't think this would be too much of an issue as it looks out on to open fields, but while pulling up my trousers today, I turned round and noticed a man walking his dog about 10 meters from the end of my garden and he had stopped to let his dog off the lead and was looking right in It turns out there is a footpath along the edge of the nearest field.

Anyway what can I do about this window? We really can't afford to replace it but I don't want everyman and his dog looking in. I also don't want to have to shut the blind everytime I go in. TIA

You can get plastic frosting, like sticky back plastic which you can stick on but its really tricky to get flat. Or some form of venetian blind or muslin curtain?

orienteerer · 23/02/2010 19:49

Put some film on it (sticky back plastic in old language.

BariatricObama · 23/02/2010 19:50

2 options

  1. get an opaque film that you stick onto the window
  2. get a sheer pull down blind that still lets in the light but is not see through during the day. ikea do a nice one.

you can buy frosted film that you just stick to the window - we did it when converting a small bedroom into a bathroom.

takes a bit of patience to get it right butit's cheap, looks just like frosted glass and has lasted well.

Milliways · 23/02/2010 19:56

We didn't realise until we moved in, that if you walk up our staircase you see a GLASS paned door right in front of you, and the toilet directly behind it!

(When viewing you sort of go in, say ooh nice bathroom and don't sit on the loo to see the staircase).

We got a voile panel to hang behind it which keeps the bathroom light but stops casual onlookers.

Thanks for all your help. Is there anywhere well known that sells this film, such as B&Q or similar? I know I could go take a look but just wondering if anyone had noticed it for sale anywhere and roughly how much it is? (were very skint, maybe I should put a red light up and turn the situation into a money spinner )

Is your window single or double glazed? If you (or your partner or a friend) is good at DIY then it might be easier to replace the glass with frosted. Strangely frosted glass is cheaper than frosted film.

If you want film try www.thevinylcorporation.co.uk

If you want glass I'd suggest stippolyte, minster or contora which look good and are inexpensive. Google Pilkington Glass for pictures of them.

How about a big pot plant? A friend of mine was in this situation and used a big plant to good effect.

Ikea sell it. It's very cheap, downside it that the sheet isn't very wide - we ended up just frosting the bottom part of the window so that we could see out of the top (nice view, plus useful when I can hear the kids screaming in the garden and want know what they're up to!)

FoxForceFive · 23/02/2010 20:26

Ikea do quite sheer roller blinds that let the light in, so it can be kept down all the time.

busywheels · 23/02/2010 20:31

How about a glass frosting spray?. Have a recollection of seeing it used on Property Ladder or similar. Example here. £4.99 a can plus postage

PirateJelly · 23/02/2010 20:38

Thanks again everyone.

Herbietea that sounds just the ticket, thanks alot.

CuppaTeaJanice- it's double glazed, but I can't imagine dp or anyone we know being able to do it with out me ending u with no window at all!

Gothdetective- I'm liking your pot plant idea as a temporary measure, but think I'd have to have a whole garden on the window for it to be effective.

Thanks daisymoo and Foxforce I'll have alook in Ikea as well as I could really do with a sheer blind for the lounge window as it is very overlooked and I really don't want to go down the granny nets line.

My bathroom window is also clear (and it is facing the back of another street houses). I bought white plastic venetian blinds and it works very well for us. Even when it is closed at daytime it still gives light to bathroom but it is not tranparent. It costed only £10

minko · 24/02/2010 09:35

The other day I saw a house where they had taken that film and cut a pattern into it, like the snowflakes you make at Xmas, where you fold the sheet up, cut little bits out, unfold and stick on your window. It looked really effective. A net curtain effect but very 21st century!

ampere · 24/02/2010 14:33

My neighbour opposite has that bubbled frosted glass in their bathroom window. But he never pulls down the vertical blind when the light's on and his utilities are obviously close to the window so I can see him cleaning his teeth, shaving and even the body contortions of him derobing prior to taking a dump. Guess he doesn't realise how much we can see!

Fizzylemonade · 24/02/2010 20:03

We used the film, it was incredibly easy to do, I did 2 windows myself.

Very cheap from here

My parents just have a cheap white roller blind that they leave shut all the time.

cyb · 24/02/2010 20:08

you can still see through that film if its dark and the lights are on

crankytwanky · 24/02/2010 20:09

We use frosted sticky film stuff.

Covert Bruhme.
Buy from Ikea.(£1.99 a roll.)
