glass roof veranda (sort of) in south west facing garden?

My dp wants to create a space outside our dining room which we can use in spring and summer by building some sort of structure with a glass roof. At one side would be the garden fence we share with our neighbour and the other side would be our extension.
I'm worried that it will be too hot in summer given its south west facing but my dp thinks as it is an open space apart from the roof it will be ventilated.
I think the whole idea is mad as you don't see houses in hot countries with glass structures they want shade! plus I bet it will be too expensive. He's been looking at too many mags with admittedly fab pictures of glass structures.
Does anyone have an experience of glass structures getting lots of sun and how useable they are? The practicality?

I think he is completely mad too.

One of those beautiful striped awnings would be far more suitable. You will want some shade on sunny days! No one wants to sit and eat outside in full on blazing sun.

You could incorporate this into the 'glass'.

Why not just have a pergola where the plants give the shade (and colour and scent and movement and ...)

He doesn't want a pergola cos we won't get cover from the rain.

I suggested a sun shade but he thinks these are for pensioners as all the people you see advertising these are usually pensioners! At the moment we put up a sail when we want shade which i think is lovely but will no to. I think we wants a statement out the back garden which is why the drive for the glass structure.

By the way he never sits outside.

"He doesn't want a pergola cos we won't get cover from the rain."

Who sits outside in an open-sided structure in the rain!? He is a loon.
Whatever it is, you won't use it when it's poring - our conservatory roof is very noisy so it's a depressing place to be when it's raining.

"By the way he never sits outside."

ROFL.

pouring

it would be a good space for drying washing. The idea of that might put him off.

Snorkie

He's really keen on using it as a drying area - he sees that as a v. positive thing.

I must go back and talk to him about the noise and what do you with drains/gutters etc.
