Buildings Insurance whilst renovating and not living in the property

I called my insurer today to advise them that we're moving out and need to split our contents and buildings insurance so that we move our contents to the rented and keep the buildings insurance in place whilst our house is majorly renovated for the next 6 months. Apparently AXA our insurer can't do the buildings insurance whilst we're not there as they don't do "unoccupied insurance" -

have you had the same thing and how did it work ? Where did you get insurance from ?

Annoying too as the discount we get for not having the contents is £37 but I suspect our buildings insurance is going to be expensive....

Advice please from oh wise ones !!

I mean not having the buildings insurance with our current insurer and just keeping our contents in the rented place.....

We had to take out an "empty buildings insurance" when we bought a property to renovate. We got it from someone recommended by our insurers. It was blardy expensive though - about £1,300 for 12 months, although we were told we would get a refund for any unused months.

If you're interested, I can pass on the details to you.

There aren't many insurers who do empty buildings insurance.

We used NFU Mutual but it was only for a couple of months and I think they just stipulated that someone had to spend a night there every 31 days or something like that.

It wasn't hard to arrange as the builders stayed over regularly and I popped up fortnightly or so.

It might be worth giving them a call as they were very helpful, and based in UK (bugbear of mine ).

We use Aviva and did exactly as you did - split it so contents moved with us for 6 months to rented and buildings stayed put with conditions on, being an unoccupied building site.

The buildings insurance was quite complex in terms of the detail needed, so each time we called Aviva we had the architect with us who took the phone and sorted the difficult questions. They weren't keen to do it but the architect read them the riot act and they did.

Also as it was split, we had for some reason to take out a new policy on contents and get a refund on our existing one.

AXA have said the existing contents can stay which is good news and we retain our usual renewal date.

I've had one quote from someone (can't remember who !) - for about £430 with not too many stipulations.

There are soo many things to think about with this renovation project and to boot both our pre-schoolers are ill this weekend with D&V so my plans of getting packing and clearing underway this weekend have been scuppered and I've been parked under a duvet watching crap telly all weekend (can't complain though I secretly enjoyed that bit !)
