Do you live on a private road? some maintenance questions

i live on a private road with lots of elderly neighbours ( seriously all of them) anyway one old lady came and asked me if i would try and sort out getting quotes for the re-surfacing of the road as its a bit knackered. well she actually asked me if my husband could do it ( bless!) cos i'm a woman and ergo incapable was the tone of the thing

i'm wondering if there is anything that i need to take into consideration?

i have people coming on saturday to do some quotes (3) and i will ask if they have insurance.

also, we hav a small business on our street and the owner is a cunt little difficult.

so how is this all going to work out if some people refuse to pay

has anyone done anything like this before?

We live on a private road and there is a residents association which takes an annual subscription of around £100.
The road was re-surfaced before we moved in, was quite pricey I think.

Could you try and get approval from everyone before arranging any quotes? You won't want to be making up someone's share if there is a shortfall. Perhaps have a signed list of neighbours who want the work to go ahead and you can show this to the tricky bloke?

yes thats a good idea, there are 5 neighbours on the street and they are all friends and agree, but we have two carparking spaces belongng to flats and this business owner and i think that its gonna get tricky.

thanks

I used to live on a private road - there was a proper compny set up to manage the "common parts". One persoan from each of the 8 houses was a company director, one was treasurer, compaby secretary etc, we contributed a set sum of money approx £100 pa towards costs ie resurfacing. We had bi-annual meetings, where most people turned up. But it was all properly oficial like. i wanted to go on a gameshow so I could describe myself as "a company director".

Are people likely to refuse to pay or is everyone in favour? IME unless everyone is in favour you've got years of meetings ahead of you trying to reach a consensus.

I live in a cul-de-sac where the road and footpaths are private, well I say private they aren't actually owned by anyone, and the houses are either privately owned or owned by a Housing Association.

the road is bad repair and the tenants group has tried in vain to get it fixed up, once this is done the council will adopt it. The HA are not responsible for the road, but they did at one time agree to get quotes done and get the road fixed up if the owners paid their share and then the HA would cover the tenants. There were 9 owners at that time and only 3 of them would agree to pay costs, so the whole thing was abandoned.

If someone refuses to pay their share then you are stuck as you can't force them to pay and then nothing gets done about it.
