Would you/do you live near a motorway?

And by that I mean within spitting distance!

We're house hunting at the moment and have viewed a house that is about 400 yds from the M4! The noise wasn't actually as bad as I'd imagined it would be - but what's it like living with it every day?

The house is huge and would clearly be out of our price range if it were not so close to the motorway - is it worth it for the living space we'd get inside?

Any opinions/experience gratefully received .

sb6699, the M25 was very carpark-like when I drove home from my parents this afternoon, so I really feel for your DH. I was saying to them that we'd never move back to that area, mainly because we just couldn't be bothered with that traffic anymore.

Heated also makes a very good point about being aware of potential future developments - road widening, landfill sites, service areas, etc., are all potential developments in the vicinty of motorways.

I'm the same as Kaloki - grew up near the M4 and under one of the Heathrow flight paths. You do get used to it. I never used to hear the planes.

I do live in a much quieter place now and do really notice the difference when I go back. Must admit, I wouldn't go back but only because I personally prefer being a country bumpkin surrounded by trees!

i am about to move into a bungalow with train line close by , breakdown truck storage at back and under flight path for stansted .on plus side will not need to every worry about noise dc make in back garden

Nope, nowhere near! And I live in England! very rare. Nearest motorways are:

  1. M40 (N) 14.1 miles
  2. M42 (W)14.6 miles
  3. M5 (N) 16.1 miles
  4. M50 23.2 miles
  5. A38 (M) (N) 25.2 miles

Nice zombie thread! What exactly was the point in your post Wilkinson?

Heatherjayne1972 · 27/08/2016 12:38

I live quite close to the m4. It's ok. You get used to the noise
It's a constant 'whoosh' type of noise
My sister lived right next to a train line - now that was horrendous

DesolateWaist · 27/08/2016 12:49

And you reanimated a Zombie thread to tell us that Wilkinson because.......?

wilkinsonj417 · 23/12/2016 23:13

came across this page on the internet so I thought people would be interested. Their obviously isn't anything zombie about this page if you could reply in 7 minutes.

GloriousHarpy · 23/12/2016 23:24

You revived a thread last posted on in 2010 in order to tell us exactly how far you live from five motorways?

The OP has potentially bought and sold several houses in the interim...

wilkinsonj417 · 24/12/2016 01:12

I posted not with the intention of helping the person that started the post, but rather people like me who scroll through the internet looking for useful information

Janey50 · 24/12/2016 02:10

I live very close to the M4 and can honestly say I have never noticed any noise probably because it's drowned out by the house from living on the Heathrow flight path

periwinklepickspoppies · 27/12/2016 20:17

No way. When we viewed houses one backed on to the motorway, the owner said he was moving because his Ds had developed asthma since they moved there.

Lilmisskittykat · 27/12/2016 21:36

I live on a road out of a small town .. it can be loud especially when it rains so from my own experience I would not be upgrading to a motorway.

I also cannot leave my windows open on a warm night because of the noise which was something I didn't notice at the time.

I grew up in a house very near junction 9 of the M6 (a very busy stretch). The noise was like a constant hum but it wasn't one that was overwhelming. I think it depends how noise sensitive you are. The windows were always filthy though!

Honeyandfizz · 28/12/2016 20:52

Ah shit the zombie got me Hmm

MrCreosote · 29/12/2016 01:27

When my wife and I were looking for a house earlier this year on rightmove, saw some lovely houses, then check the location. If they were close to a motorway, I scratched them off the list straight away.

At the end of the day, it really is, location, location, location.
