Is it outside under a small cover?

Under the floorboards by the front door?

We are in a Victorian terrace and our neighbours recently discovered that they didn't have one (as their house flooded). They had to pull up some of the stable blocks under the shared access alleyway and switch us all off temporarily. So it is possible that you don't have one.

Littlefish · 16/02/2010 21:22

To get to mine, you go....

Out of the house
Down the bridle path
Between the ponds
Through the field
Over the gate
Turn right
Walk along the road
Find the blue paint on the edge of the road
Take one large step towards the hedge
Scrabble around to find the sunken water mains cover
Remember that you've left the special tap turning thingy back in the house
Reverse your journey
Find the tap turning thingy
Go back through the field etc.

Does that help? Or at least make you feel better!

Lonicera · 16/02/2010 21:25

I was going to suggest looking outside - then I saw Littlefish's post

bigstripeytiger · 16/02/2010 21:25

We have an internal mains tap in the basement bathroom (From its position it doesnt seem plausible that all the water in the house passes through it, but it must), and an external one in under a cover on the pavement outside the house.

venusonarockbun · 16/02/2010 21:30

Oh this reminds me of a house we once lived in. Couldnt find the thing anywhere. In the end someone from the water company came out with some kind of detecting machine and managed to find it buried in the garden.

millarkie · 16/02/2010 21:35

My mum's is in her loft...

As well as under the floor by the door, we've had understairs cupboard, and in downstairs loo.

Hope you find it soon.

I had to phone the old owners to find out where it was. There was a very vague description in the HIP, but certainly not enough to help me find it!

Lotkinsgonecurly · 16/02/2010 22:06

Ours is inside a really small man hole cover at the road side, we've got quite a long path from the road to the house so is really not obvious.

(Ours took a year to find!)

Lotkinsgonecurly · 16/02/2010 22:07

We wern't constantly looking though

Our neighbours only found theirs because another neighbour works for the local water company and has an interest in such things . I hope you find it soon.

Wonderstuff · 16/02/2010 22:10

My mum doesn't have one, she has to turn water off in the road (house about 200yo) she has been trying to have one put in so that she can have new works done and meet building regs and be able to sell the house more easily... No one can find where the water enters her house, she has had 3 plumbers give up on it and been in contact with the water board who won't help..

taffetacat · 16/02/2010 22:11

I used to live in a Victorian terrace and can't remember exactly but it wasn't in the house. I had to ask the neighbours it was some kind of shared thingy like Washersaurus mentioned.

Washersaurus · 16/02/2010 22:13

Fortunately, we have our own tap in the cellar - that is at least one thing the previous owners did to the house that was useful.

MrsL123 · 16/02/2010 22:24

Our street is made up of small terrace blocks (3 or 4 houses in each) and each block has a shared mains tap, so I think it's quite common. We didn't discover this until the plumber came to fit our new boiler, so we had to tell the neighbours they'd be without water for a few hours. But as it turned out, the first job he did was fit a shut-off valve inside the house, which took him a matter of minutes, and then he could turn the mains back on again without affecting our house. Hopefully your plumber can do the same thing, then the shared one only needs to to be turned off for a short time.

Rebeccaj · 16/02/2010 22:36

In our old Victorian terrace, it was under the floor under the fridge. Kudos to the plumber who eventually found that for me!

Ours is in the airing cupboard, next to the boiler, but it looks as though it's part of the oil fired boiler, iyswim.

Kathyjelly · 17/02/2010 08:44

Mine is under a 7" concrete "mushroom" cover by the front gate. Which was a nightmare when I first moved in because I'd parked the car on top of it and it took two days to find.

Is your house similar to next door? Have you asked the neighbours?
