Loft conversion and new bolier.

we're hoping to start our loft conversion soon, which will give us an additional (4th)bedroom, and en-suite. At the moment we have a combi boiler, and have been advised to upgrade our boiler to cope with the new bathroom. Those of you with four or more bedrooms, what type of boiler do you have? We're leaning towards a megaflo which we've been told would mean we could have two showers running at the same time with no loss of temperature/pressure. Also like the look of a Vaillant condensing boiler. Has anyone got either of these, and if so, how's it working for you?

We had a loft conversion in a previous house and a combi-boiler. There was no problem with regards loss of temp/pressure, though the boiler was situated on the first floor rather than the ground (no idea if this made any difference). The loft en-suite shower ran off the combi too. It was a Worcester-Bosch combi.

Our friend is a heating engineer and only really recommends Vaillant or Worcester-Bosch. We had a Vaillant in our last house (fitted by said friend) and it was great - they also come with a 2 year guarantee.

I've got a Vaillant. My plumber (who is brilliant) highly recommended them. It has worked really well ... until it broke down a week ago. One of the rubber tubes went. My plumber says that Vaillant know these tubes are a problem and they've replaced them with copper in the newer ones.

I must say that actually this breakdown has increased my confidence with them. Despite me forgetting to send off the guarantee Vaillant were really helpful, and honoured the guarantee without quibbling and sent a plumber to fix it for free. They did insist I got it serviced, but you're meant to do this once a year anyway, it's a condition of the guarantee, but as I've had it 18 months this was fair enough IMO. They were happy for my usual plumber to do it, or they could do it when they came to fix it.

So I'd say go for them. If you'e getting one now, the problem has been fixed. I think how a company deals with things when they go wrong is really important.

Also if you need a good plumber in the London area, just ask, I'd be pleased to pass the details of my guy on. He's not cheap - he's Corgi resisted (or whatever the equivalent is these days) but he really knows his stuff, and is a nice guy too.

Vaillant are v' good.

How much does a loft conversion cost these days? (We want one, but I'm too scared to get a builder to quote incase I faint )

We're in Bromley and have had 4 quotes, all around the £33,000 mark. This is for 1 room with Juliette balcony and en-suite bathroom.

We've got a valliant condensing boiler - it rocks!

A megaflow is ok as long as you've got good mains water pressure and the water pipes into the house are big enough. Normally it's something like a 25mm water main (don't quote me on that!) This is dependant on the area and the house - so maybe get that checked if you've not done so already.
