A good RL friend of mine has wooden flooring upstairs and hates it with a passion. The noise downstairs is incredible just from someone moving around and going about their business.
She has a teenage daughter who spends some time in her bedroom which is directly above the sitting room though.

We've got oak floor in our bedrooms. I love it. Make sure you spend time preparing the existing floor before laying a new floor on top as it makes all the difference.
We made sure the existing floorboards were all securely nailed down first, then we put a plywood subfloor down on top on the existing floorboards. I think it was 8mm thick plywood, and it's nalied down about every 4 inches. We drew a grid of squares on the plywood to make it easier to know where to nail.
If you're worried about noise in the room below, you can get acoustic underlay boards from Wickes to put between the existing floor and new floor. They're a fibreboard type thing, about 1cm thick.
We live in a flat, and we put plywood then the acoustic boards under our living room & dining room floors, and we can't hear our downstairs neighbour at all. Before we fitted the floor we could hear his telly & hear him singing etc!
Wooden floor's a doddle to keep clean. Just hoover it, and give it a wipe with linseed oil on a soft cloth when it needs a clean.

Proper wooden floor - for defo.
Laminate floor - don't do it, it's cold and noisy.

I like it in bedrooms, much less dusty which seems much healthier....
But I do think its a good idea to have a large, thick rug around the bed so you step out of bed onto a warm surface and also to cushion the noise.

We have white oiled larch and it is fab. I agree that you need proper sound proofing.

EdgarAllenSnow · 12/02/2010 19:59

i don't like - cold and noisy - not good for littlies to crawl on.

We have parquet throughout, except for kitchen/laundry room/loos & bathrooms - 80 year old parquet! I just love the look and feel but it is quite squeaky and the whole building (12 apartments) has terrible problems with soundproofing.

It is definitely a lot more hygienic than carpet - it vacuums easily and you can wash it, if it is sealed, with a cloth and water, as if it were tiles.

I have oak floors in my bedroom - not cold and not noisy at all. I'm going to have it laid through the house - much better than carpet with kids and animals traipsing through

We have parquet in all the bedrooms. I like the look of it. You can hear downstairs when someone drops something hard on the floor but other than that it is no noisier than carpeted but squeaky upstairs floorboards.

I have wood flooring with rugs throughout my flat. I find it warm, easy to keep clean, and still looks good as it ages (which can never be said about carpet). I'm about to move and already mourning having to go back to carpet...

Go for it - with acoustic underlay and a great rug!
