How many vans and how much time to move you out of your house?

Previously we have always gone with Pickfords and we last moved 5 years ago 100 miles so had them stash our stuff overnight to move us in the next day. Took 3 men 4-5 hours to move us out.

At the time we had ds1 who was 16 month so had all the baby stuff, pram, his old clothes, toys etc.

Roll on 5 years, we are hoping to move very soon, just waiting to exchange, had a local company quote me, they too have the huge removal vans.

Guy comes tells me we have 300 sq ft of stuff stashed in the loft (yes it is a bit full but it is stuff we brought with us from the first move not extra) and we now have 2nd ds who is now 3. No clothes below his age or toys for younger children as I have donated them.

So we have a conservatory playroom that has a few ikea trofast storage units and one toy chest, we haven't really bought that much extra stuff as all our money has gone on completely gutting the house. Guy estimates £800 for 3 1/2 containers (we need to store it as can't match completion dates - that's a whole other story)

Quote comes back says £1600 for 7 containers, will take 3 man crew 2 days to move us out and 2 days to move us in. Now that is one hell of a leap from the estimate

Have now phoned Pickfords but wanted to know your experiences. If you have got this far, thank you

Just see how pickfords compares. You can accumulate loads of stuff with children and not really notice it. I would say virtually everything I have accumumlated in the last 5 years is child stuff.

at 300 sq ft of stuff in your loft - can you get rid of anything?

Fizzylemonade · 09/02/2010 12:05

Cannot believe we have 300sq ft of stuff in the loft. We stashed a lot of that in self storage for a few weeks when we were sorting everything out in the house.

We had a 50sq ft storage room which is half a car garage worth. 150sq ft is the contents of a 3 bed house!!!! I certainly don't have that up there. Jesus

Maybe call a few other companies and get them to quote - telling them you want better than £1600 - you'd think they'd need the work these days and should be able to do better than that!

how far are you moving?

we paid £1500 to move a 2 bed bungalow 200 miles.(7 ton truck) it would have been £2000 but they under quoted.

this was with armishaws 2 months ago.

Fizzylemonade · 09/02/2010 12:38

Apparently I am appalling at Maths Dh has just told me the guy said 300cubic feet not square feet!!!

I still cannot believe that I have 2 huge removal vans worth of stuff. We downsized into this house so lots of what we couldn't fit in this house was put in the loft as this was a stepping stone house.

Should point out that I live in a 3 bed modern house, so no big rambling pile, the garage is integrated.

We moved from a 3.5 bed (3 double, 1 small single) terrace (so no garage, but lots in the loft..) in August, and it took 5 men a day to pack the house (as in, put it all in boxes) and 4 men a day to move it all from SW London to Epsom (including putting all in 2 vans, driving here, unpacking; it took them from about 9.30-6pm). This cost about £2000 all in.... It's surprising how it mounts up when you've got sofas, beds, dining tables etc (and we didn't move any white goods either!)

IlanaK · 10/02/2010 22:18

We have just under 1000 cubic feet of stuff in a storage area (Big Yellow) - basically the contents of our 3 bed flat (2 adults and 3 kids worth). We totally underestimated the size of van and amount of hours it would take to move. So it would not surprise me at all if that quote was right. Our move cost about £1200 and that also included overnight storage of some of it in the van as they ran out of time.

silverfrog · 10/02/2010 22:27

we live in a 5 bed house (3 of those rooms are "empty rooms - have furniture, but no "stuff" - step-children's rooms).

essentially, it is me, dh & 2 dds (5 and2) plus all our regular furniture (sofas, dining table etc)

we will be moving next month, and fully expect quotes to come in at £2000+. we have pencilled in 3 days for the packers:

day 1 come in here and pack most stuff up into boxes/dismantle furniture which is non-essential.

day 2 load boxes onto vans (probably 2 large removal vans) and pack up the dds room (left til now to minimise stress on ASD dd1) and our bed etc. boxes stay on vans overnight for early start at new house.

day 3: early start with van 1 - everyhting unloaded and then off to collect last boxes from old house. van 2 unloads while this is going on, and furniture is re-assembled.

Hopefully, that is how it will go (is what has happened on last couple of moves). oh, and last 2 moves we have had 2x van crews, so 6-8 men (depending on times/how close to running out of time they are!)

Can you try a more local company? They are often more reasonably priced. When we moved last we moved locations again so we hired a removal firm from the location we were moving to and they quoted us considerably less than Pickfords but also offered more of a tailored service for our needs.

pickfords are expensive, Try another more local BAR registerede firm
